By DAVID SCHWARTZ

(Copyright 19'79, JTA, Inc.)

I had just dropped in on
him. He had his hand on a
book but he wasn't reading.
,There was a far away look in
his eyes.
"Any trouble, Sam?." I
asked.
You know," he replied, "I
have suddenly developed
political ambitions. Do you
think I have a chance?"
"Sam," said I, "let's be
honest about it. You're a
nice guy, but I don't think
you would make it for
President."
"Oh no, no," said Sam. "I
don't want to run for
President. I want to be a
delegate to the convention
so I can nominate the right
man for the office. I want to
nominate John Adams."
"John Adams?" I
exclaimed. "Why he was the
President who succeeded
Washington."
"Yes," said Sam, but he
only served one term. He
deserves another. Old Hon-
est Adams. Certainly," Sam

"all Jews would get
solidly behind. He was the
first President to come out
unreservedly for Zionism,
for an independent Jewish
state. He was also of course
the man foremost in the de-
bate in the Continental
Congress in 1776 for Ameri-
can independence. Adams
should get the support of all.
He is the man of the hour.
"His support for the re-
vival of the Hebrew na-
tion was expressed," Sam
said, "in a letter to Mor-
decai Noah. Do you
know," asked Sam, "any-
thing about Noah?"
"Yes," I replied, "I know a •
good deal about Noah. He is
considered the first Ameri-
can Zionist. He was also one
of the top newspapermen of
his day. Also a populat
playwright. Also," I said, "I
know about Adams' support
of the revival of the Jewish
state. In fact, when the
Jewish state was finally es-
tablished, one of Adams' de-
scendants visited Israel."
"Yes," said Sam, "I know
about that, too. Further," he
said, "Adams was also one of
the first to do something for
the revival of the Hebrew
language. In his will he left
funds for the teaching of
Hebrew along with the
classical languages.
In a letter to Jefferson,"
said Sam, "Adams wrote
that in his opinion, 'the
Jews had done more to
civilize man than any other
nation.' In a letter to Judge
Adrian Kent, Adams said
he was baffled by Voltaire's
anti-Semitism. 'How is it
possible,' he wrote, 'that he
should view the -Hebrew in
this light? They are the
most glorious people ever to
inherit the earth. The Ro-
mans and their Empire
were but a bauble in com-
parison with the Jews. They
have given religion to three
quarters of the globe and
have influenced the affairs
of mankind more hopefully
than any other nation, an-
cient or modern.' "
"Yes, Sam," I said, "and
there is still another rea-
son I 'night add to yours
why Adams would be a
good candidate today. He
had experience with the
problem of Middle East
terrorism.
"Some of the Mediterra-
nean nations, Tripoli,
Libya, Algeria claimed
ownership of the Mediter-
ranean and regularly seized
the crews and passengers of
other nations traveling in it
and held them for ransom.
"Adams was the first
American Ambassador to
England after the winning
of American independence
and his first problem was
that of dealing with this ter-
rorism. It was to take some
time before the matter was
settled and his experience
with it should be helpful to-
day. And maybe arising to
speak today before the
United Nations, the voicing
of his experience would be
very helpful and certainly
the whole world would lis-
ten." '
