FINALLY
after 9 weeks my hospital confinement due to my
recent illness and subsequent surgery is over.
Because of all the expressions of love, warmth
and encouragement from my dearest relatives
and literally hundreds of friends this acknowl-
edgement of my thanks and gratitude is com-
pletely necessary. While my recovery is not yet
complete I am on my way and hope to see you real
soon.

Sephardic studies program
since 1964, was in Detroit
last week to visit its
Sephardic community.
Rabbi Gaon talked about
the Sephardic studies pro-
gram at Yeshiva University
and said that a bachelor's
degree in Sephardic studies
is offered.
Ladino or Judeo-Spanish,
the Sephardic counterpart
of Yiddish, also is taught at
the university. He esti-
mated that about 170 per-
sons were involved in the
Sepahrdic studies program.
He said that a goal of
his visit to the Detroit
Sephardic community
was to help "re-
establish" it. Asked how
he planned to do this, he
said he would help the
Sephardim try to find a
place of worship of their
own. On the High Holi-
days, the Sephardic
Community of Detroit
had been using the
Zionist Cultural Center.
Rabbi Gaon said he was
"not trying to separate the
Sephardim from the
Ashkenazim" and said he
was impressed by the sup-
port the Ashkenazic com-
munity lent its Sephardic
counterpart.
. He lauded the Yeshiva
University program of
Sephardic studies. He said
an aim of the program is "to
produce rabbis to be
brought up in the spirit of
the Sephardic tradition.
"Yeshiva University is
the most suitable place for
Sephardim (in America) to
find a haven to be brought
up and educated," he said.
Rabbi M. Mitchell
Serels, assistant director
of the Sephardic studies
program at Yeshiva Uni-
versity, who is touring
the U.S. with Rabbi Gaon
said that there was a "re-
naissance of Sephardic
culture" in the U.S.
caused by immigration,
Jewish Center Focal Point
of Wide Range of Events
Jack Bressler was in-
stalled as the president of
the Jewish Community
Center Businessmen's Club
particularly by that of
Iranian Jews.
Detroit's Sephardic com-
munity is comprised of
about 100 families, who
came from or are descended
from persons from
Spanish-speaking or Arabic
countries, whose ancestors
were expelled during the
Spanish Inqiusition and
were dispersed to Africa,
Asia and pre-state Israel.
