WANT A GOOD corned
beef sandwich? . . . Don't
look for it in New York .. .
While there recently to visit
Scott, attending New York
State University at Far-
mingdale, I went into the
city with him from Hun-
tington Bay, Long Island,
where he is staying with
brother Leslie and sister-
in-law Fran (Glicken) Ball,
both former Detroiters.
Leslie, a top vice
president at Macy's, told us
about the Herald Square
Delicatessen-Restaurant
across the street from his
huge store . . . Small bread
is used and about three to
four oz. of beef (Detroit uses
about five or six oz.) with
absolutely no taste . . . After
each sandwich is made, in-
stead of putting the corned
beef back in the steamer, it
is left on the counter . . . He-
brew National salamis
hang all over . . . and a sign
says, "We sell kosher and
non-kosher."
The sandwich I had came
with a tiny pickle and was
$3.75 (comlcination sand-
wiches are $4.50 and up) .. .
Scott had a corned beef and
French fries, which are 95

cents . . . Coffee is 45 cents
and trying to get a second
cup is like a dentist trying to
pull teeth from the mouth of
a patient who doesn't have
any.
The state of New York
boasts more delis than
anyplace in the world ...
but what it fails to tell is
that most of them are
merely carry-out party
stores that sell anything
but delicatessen prod-
ucts as Detroiters know
them to be.
Sit-down delis in New
York are like a premium .. .
Good ones are even harder
to find.
Even the Stage Delicates-
sen on Broadway isn't what
it used to be when owner
Max Asnas was alive . .
Show people still go there
.. but tourists especially
know of only one
delicatessen-restaurant in
New York, the Stage, al-
though there are some good
ones on the East Side.
Getting back home makes
a person really appreciate
the fact that Detroit is
among the top in America's
delicatessen-restaurants.
The first night on Long
Island, Leslie and Fran
took Scott and I to one of
their favorite restaurants
▪ . on Route 25-A in
Northport ... La Capan-
nina ... featuring north-
ern Italian food which is
quite different than that
served in southern Ita-
lian (Sicilian) eateries .. .
It seems to lean a bit more
to a French style of prep-
aration ... Maybe be-
cause the northern part
of Italy is near France .. .
Starting out with a fine
bottle of Pinot Grigio white
wine with its delightful
bouquet, I had a pasta called
Papparella, fresh noodles,
mushrooms, parmigiana
cheese, heavy cream and
butter . . . It was delicious
and seemed to have the
slight added taste of sesame
. . . My entree was Veal
Valdostana, stuffed and
sauteed with white wine
and mushrooms . . . an un-
usual but very good dish.
Northern Italian and
southern Italian have
hardly recognizable fea-
tures in cuisine.
Broadway is a maze of
humanity . . . every kind
you can name . . . with
people on corners selling
shish kebob . . . bagels .. .
orange juice . . . Italian ices
. . . garments . . . cologne .. .
hot chestnuts . . . etc. .. .
even blood pressure for a
dollar.
There's a three-card
monte game on cardboard
boxes almost every block
along Broadway . . . with
shills better actors than
some in the plays nearby as
they exclaim excitement at
"winning." . . . or "being
smarter" than the slick card
manipulator . . . their part-
ner.
There's newstands galore
. . . hawkers and hookers
everywhere . . . soap box
lecturers all around.
