Faculty of Life Sciences are
designed to draw Sephardi
youth to universities by
kindling the interest of
young children from poor
neighborhoods in scientific
study.
Fifty of the best pupils of a
junior high school in the
Hatikva Quarter, a poor Tel
Aviv neighborhood, were
chosen to take part in a
summer program at Tel
Aviv University offering a
wide range of scientific sub-
jects including such topics
as electron microscopes,
raising bees, cancer, plant
life, heredity and bacteria.
The program also in-
cluded field trips, the use
of the university pool,
and a visit to the Museum
of the Jewish Diaspora,
located on the university
campus.
"When Sepharadi pupils
of these poor neighborhoods
are successful in their
studies, the highest goal
they usually set for them-
selves is being technicians.
They rarely think in terms
of university studies," says
the coordinator of the pro-
gram, Dr. Abraham Hefetz,
himself of Egyptian origin.
The Social Assistance
is ORT's way of
looking after_ the "whole"
Adds TAU microbiologist
Prof. Boaz Moav, "It is in-
cumbent upon us to con-
tinue to encourage them, to
give them a chance, and to
take those who have the
qualities of ability, will
power, and motivation, and
to 'push with all our
strength, to remove them
from the social pressure of
non-achievement."
And what is the impact
of the program, now in its
fourth year, on these
youngsters? Says a pupil
who participated in the
program, "I've never
been in a university be-
fore this. We've seen so
many things here that
we've never even thought
about before in our lives.
I'm planning to study at
the university."

GAZA (ZINS) — The lot of
the residents of the Gaza
Strip has improved dramat-
ically since Israel captured
the area during the Six-Day
War in 1967.
In 1969, Gaza had 2,000
cars. Today there are
10,000. Infant mortality has
been reduced 75 percent,
some 100,000 children are
enrolled in schools and
7,000 attend Egyptian uni-
versities.
Approximately 100,000
persons have abandoned
refugee camps and settled
in permanent homes. Gaza
now produces enough ag-:
ricultural products for its
own needs and exports $70,
million in agriculture prod-
ucts annually.
