NEW YEAR GREETINGS

RAMSGATE — If there
was a center of Jewish pil-
grimage on English soil it
would surely be on a wooded
knoll behind a row of 19th
Century cottages on the
east coast of the county of
Kent. Here, 70 miles south-.
east of London, in the sleepy
town of Ramsgate, lies the
body of Sir Moses Mon-
tefiore, the greatest Jew in
English history.
He lies beside his wife
Judith in the beautiful tomb
he designed for her after her
death in 1862. It is .a copy of
the Tomb of Rachel outside
Jerusalem, which he him-
self restored after one of his
seven visits to the Holy
Land during a long life of
service to his people. From a
circle of stained glass in its
domed roof, soft pink light
falls on the twin marble
slabs beneath which the
couple sleep.
The small Arabesque
mausoleum stands a few
feet from the equally beau-
tiful synagogue erected by
Sir Moses 30 years earlier.
In his last years, he used to
be carried there in a sedan
chair from his cliff-top man-
sion half a mile away. He
would pray surrounded by
the colony of Jewish schol-
ars whom he gathered
around him. Of the 13 cot-
tages he built for them only
one remains, occasionally
used by Sephardi ministers
as a weekend retreat.
Until 18 years ago, reg-
ular service's were held
by students at a nearby
Sephardi rabbinical sem-
inary. But the college has
been moved to London
and since there are only a
handful of Jews in the
district, services are now
held only three or four
times a year.
Sir Moses' coat •of arms,
emblazoned with the He-
brew name of Jerusalem, is
proudly displayed on the
synagogue's outer wall as
well as over its holy of
holies. Most of the silver
vestments of the scrolls of
the law are kept in a bank
for safety, but some of the
scrolls are still here, written
by Sir Moses' personal
scribe, except for their last
lines which he completed
himself.
The passage of time in
this silent synagogue is
measured by the chime of a
melodious clock. In another
six years, its golden notes
will have ticked away a.cen-
tury since Sir Moses died at
the age of 101. The bicente-
nary of his birth and cente-
nary of his death will arouse
solemn recollections
throughout the Jewish
world of his labors for Zion
and his suffering brethren.
It may also revive the de-
bate about whether his re-
mains should stay in
England or be transferred to
Israel, which has so many
monuments to his munifi-
cence. Last year, the
endowment trust which
administers the Montefiore

estate declined an invita-
tion by the Israel govern-
ment for the body's rein-
terment alongside Theodor
Herzl in Jerusalem. The
present tomb in Kent, The
Garden of England," is lov-
ingly guarded and
preserved. But what of the
future?
The majestic house
where the Montefiores
lived, East Cliff Lodge,
has already disappeared.
It was pulled down after
World War II when it was
occupied by the army.
The 13-acre garden sur-
rounding it is now a park,
administered by the
Ramsgate Town Council.

In Jerusalem today
there are many famous
Montefiore relics — such
as the "Montefiore
Houses" overlooking the
Old City, the incongruous
windmill he built there,
and the enormous
stagecoach in which he
traveled to Russia to
intercede with the czar
on behalf of persecuted
Jewry.
But Sir Moses also was an
English gentleman, ad-
mired and knighted by
Queen Victoria, and recog-
nizing no conflict between
his Jewishness and his
Englishness.
