SILVER and husband
Raphael (who is the son of
the late Rabbi Abba Hillel
Silver) are an independent
filmmaking team who first
surprised audiences with
"Hester Street," the deeply
moving tale of an immig-
rant family on the East Side
of New York at the turn of
the century.
"Between the Lines" was
a low-key drama set in the
editorial offices of a small-
town newspaper. "On the
Yard," now in release, is a
devastating expose of prison
conditions with the focus on
the dreary daily lives of
long-term inmates at the
mercy of underground bos-.
ses who control the cells
with bribes and threats.
While Silver directed "On
the Yard" with his wife as
producer, Mrs. Silver now
on her own completed on lo-
cation in Salt Lake City a

JERUSALEM — Interns
For Peace has succeeded in
placing 10 of their interns
into three Arab com-
munities in Israel's north-
ern district — Tamra (pop.
15,000), in the western
Galilee, the Ar'ara and
Kara (pop. 6,000 each), both
in the Little Triangle
region.
As a sign of the coopera-
tion and hospitality that the
interns have received from
the communities, the local
community councils have
taken on the responsibility
of providing housing for
them in the villages where
they are working.
According to Rabbi Bruce
Cohen, program director,
the interns (eight North
American Jews and two Is-
raelis — one Jew and one
Arab) are working closely
with the local advisory
committees of Interns For
Peace. These committees,
consisting of village leaders
and other professionals
from within the com-
munities, are helping the
interns to integrate them-
selves into the predomin-
antly Moslem communities.
The interns are also
working with these advi-
sory committees to help
develop regional
cooperative programs
between Israel's rural
Jewish and Arab com-
munities. The interns will
act as bridges between
the two groups by bring-
ing people together to
work on mutually bene-
ficial projects.
Persons wishing to be-
come Interns For Peace can

Over Heels," from the novel,
"Chilly Scenes of Winter"
by Anne Beattie which Mrs.
Silver not only adapted to
the screen but also directed.
RUTH GORDON, the
quite youthful octogenarian
most recently with Lee
Strasberg in "Boardwalk"
against a middle-class
Brooklyn background, now
stars scilo in "My Body-
guard" — in its entirely to
be photographed on loca-
tions in Chicago. The cur-
rent epic shows Ms. Gordon
as a retired musical comedy
dancer who still enjoys her-
self at a neighborhood rum-
pus room — given the task
of watching over her 15-
year-old grandson (por-
trayed by Chris Makepeace)
growing up in a quite un-
savory neighbothood of the
windy city.
WILLIAM FRIEDKIN,
in the streets of New York,
has completed the highly
explosive picture "Cruis-
ing," starring Al Pacino as a
policeman setting up a
decoy to catch a
psychopathic killer.
MARK ROBSON, before
his untimely death, was
about to complete on the
sound stages of Rome the in-
ternational adventure story
with political undertones,
"Avalanche Express" star-
ring Lee Marvin, Maximi-
lian Schell, Linda Evans,
Joe Namath, Horst Buch-
Holz, Mike Connors and
the late Robert Shaw.
Some 30 years before he
rose to instant prominence
when guiding the Oscar-
winning "The Champion"
starring Kirk Douglas, it
also-brought producer Stan-
ley Kramer into the fore-
ground of courageous film
making. Director Robson
and producer Kramer
teamed up again with
"Home of the Brave," the
first film to tackle the race
issue within the armed
forces.
Japan Takes
Arab Slant
WASHINGTON
—
Newsweek magazine re-
ports that Japanese Foreign
Minister Sunao Sonoda has
decided to urge the Israelis
to pull out of all occupied
Arab territories, including
East Jerusalem. In a speech
at the UN later this month,
Sonoda will also urge that
the PLO be included in fu-
ture peace talks, Newsweek
says.
Last month, Sonoda held
a dinner party for 13 Arab
ambassadors, but pointedly
left Egyptian representa-
tives off the guest list.
