(Continued from Page 28)
never thought of doing this
with Crackers in the first
place!
THERE IS absolutely no
affiliation whatsoever be-
tween Bread Basket Deli in
Oak Park, Bagel Nosh in
Southfield and Bagel Bas-
ket Deli in West Bloomfield.
SENATE CONEY IS-
LAND has finally opened
on Southfield and
and 10 Mile . . . The former
site of Athenian Cuisine,
Purple Pickle and about
three or four other names at
the same location, has a
completely different look
. . . No wonder it took so
long . . . Previous setups
were never really changed
from one owner to another
. . . This one has been re-
vamped drastically . . . be-
yond any semblance of
recognition . . . A seemingly
larger counter is now on the
opposite wall . . . There are
leather-like booths for twos
and fours and sixes .
simething the other places
didn't have . . . Whatever
booths they had were the
hard wooden variety .. .
Seating at Senate is for
about 67 including nine
padded counter seats .. .
The redesigning is amaz-
ingly different . . . Totally
unrecognizable from before
. . . Never would have
dreamed there could be so
much room . . . and such a
vast change . . . Only things
that visibly look like they
were there from before are
the grounds and the restau-
rant's four walls.
WHO SAYS you can't
have two faces? . . . In the
case of Buddy's Pizza, it's,
true . . . Newest spot on Van
Dyke and Old 13 Mile, has a
large kitchen . . . booths ga-
lore . . . a party room . . . and
seating for 160.
The original place on
McNichols and Conant has
the old-time look with seat-
ing over 200.
Both locales have the
same kind of very fine
square pizza, salads and Ita-
lian dishes . . . just about
the same menu items ..
The original Buddy's has
the kind of atmosphere
people have known for all
these years . . . Not so on
Van Dyke spot, which
beams completely with the
modernistic look of today.
A third location on 12
Mile and Van Dyke is
strictly for carry-out.
NOT EVERYBODY
knew the suffering of Belle
Horenstein, former owner
with husband Max at Max's
Deli on Southfield . . . She
was a strong person hardly
ever complaining during
the 21/2 years of pain that fi-
nally took its toll . . . Belle
and Max ended a 39-year
marital partnership when
she recently passed away
. . . Her ready smile may be
gone . . . but Belle's memory
will live forever.
RITA LIPSKY . . . on
plane returning from Las
Vegas . . . learning it was a
DC-10 . . . "I hope they
checked out the plane .. .
Don't think I'm not nerv-
ous." . . . Rita took a pill for
flying and asked when the
plane was going to stop .. .
She was told it was already
on the ground.. . Rita
didn't forget hubby Irving
back home . . . she made
sure MGM Grand Hotel
gave her a box of cigars for
him . . . the good ones .. .
Rita would have stayed, but
wanted to be home for sur-
prise birthday party of
daughter Rhoda Lubaski,
given by her husband Jim,
at Old Parthenon in Greek-
town . . . Their other daugh-
ter, Marlene Balan, almost
came home from Las Vegas
with Rita . . . She lives in
San Francisco with hubby
Bob, a computer analyst
with United Airlines .. .
Rita missed her calling .. .
She should have been a
comedienne.
Sharing a suite of rooms
at the MGM Grand with
Thrifty Insurance gent. Bob
Katz revealed him at a
fighting 185 lbs. now .. .
alinost 40 pounds lighter .. .
Bob and wife Fran, who met
him at the Sands for an-
other four-day stay, will
soon celebrate their 35th
anniversary.
Hellos from former De-
troiters Stu Segal, pit boss
at MGM, and MGM dealer
Ken Schnitzler . . . Stu's
wife Marge is maitre d' in
the gourmet room at Hilton
International Hotel.
FIRST ATTRACTION
at Birmingham Theater
since the Nederlander
Theatrical Corp. took over
its management in June,
will be Saturday night at
7:30 . . . Peter Yarrow and
Mary Travers, two-thirds of
the former Peter, Paul and
Mary singing group, live in
concert.
The Birmingham Theater
will be primarily involved
in legitimate stage prod-
