Danny Raskin's
NEW CHINESE restau-
rant with all the makings
for success is New Kim's
Gardens on Novi Rd. be-
, tween Grand River and
1-96.
Owned by Garling and
Kim Wong, its roots are
deep in Chinese food tradi-
tion . . . Garling's father,
who is there watching his
daughter with paternal
pride, was a waiter for
Eugene Foo when he opened
Kow Kow Inn years back on
W, McNichols near Wood-
ward . . . In the kitchen,
Kim needs little introduc-
tion . . . his reputation in
Chinese cuisine is well
noted.
Our waitress, Mary Huie,
is the daughter of former
House of Huie owners.
Kim's preparations are
fresh and tasty . . . whether
it be Sizzling War Bar (lobs-
ter meat, etc.), Mandarin
Chicken or Chow Yum Harr
(marinated unshelled
shrimp in ginger and
Chinese herbs).
Seating at New Kim Gar-
dens is 170 broken into in-
timate proportions.
The beautiful outside
pagoda, an architectural de-
light, is your welcome sign.
IF YOU'VE never had
steamed white fish, don't be
surprised . . . neither have
too many . . . unless they've
eaten at the Rikshaw Inn,
Orchard Lake Rd. and
Maple in the Orchard Mall
. . . It's one of owner-chef
David 'Cum's favorite spe-
cialties . . . for people on
diets and not on diets .. .
Also, steamed white fish
has no cholesterol.
DON'T DRIVE FAST or
you'll miss Club Berkley
now . . . The popular dining
and watering spot on
Woodward and 11 1/2 Mile,
has had an exterior face lift
very much for the better.
Inside changes have been
removal of a wall separat-
ing the bar and making it
into one big dining area .. .
plus dance floor in another
location.
Chef Ezzie Holyk is still
head of the kitchen and con-
tinuing to do a wonderful
job . . . The small lake perch
I had were superb . . . as
were the succulent tiny frog
legs . . . Waitress Karen
Siterlet has only been at
Club Berkley a few months
. . . but the experience she
garnered at other well-
known spots is the reason
for her very pleasant and
congenial personality.
THE RUMORS ARE
true . . . that Darby's Stan-
ley Steamer in Oak Park
has been sold . . . Name is
again The Stanley Steamer.
PATRICE ALVEY is
normally a barmaid at Sam
II (formerly Shakespeare's)
on corner of Telegraph and
Plymouth, but she is a
former waitress . . . and was
helping on the floor last
time I was there . . . Patrice
is good . . . as was the white
fish, salad bar and cream of
mushroom soup.
Excellent
piano-
songstress Kathy Landis
starts at 7 p.m. . . . Wednes-
day through Saturday.
The number one impres-
sion is how you are greeted
at a restaurant . . . and Sam
II evening hostess, Victoria
Fitzsimmons, is among the
best.
JIM JOSEFF, catering
director at Sheraton-
Southfield on W. Nine Mile,
was raised in the restaurant
business . . . 12 years old
when Joseff Bros. Restau-
rant was closed on Wood-
ward and Elizabeth . . .
Three years later, he
worked for his father, Isa-
dore Joseff, in the restau-
rant at the Roosevelt Hotel
across from New York Cen-
tral, starting as a busboy,
restaurant room service and
waiter . . . He learned the
food trade here . . . and at
dad's other eateries . . . in
the Yorba on Lafayette
Blvd., Grant Hotel on John
R. and the Eddystone Hotel
on Park Ave.
Since Dec. 15 of last year,
Jim has been catering head
at Sheraton-Southfield with
its 800 capacity and separa-
tion ballroom . . . Over 30
years in the catering busi-
ness includes being area
supervisor seven years for
Al Green Enterprises, han-
dling all special catering
plus the four restaurants
. . . and six years at Raleigh
House as general manager
under Sammy Lieberman.
Jim is the last of the
Joseffs in the food business
. . . His brother Marty
Corinne owns Cranbrook
Realty . . . A sister Eleanor,
is married locally to Merrill
Bronstein . . . and another
sister, Blanche, lives in St.
Louis, married to Nardy
Levin.
He and wife Rita recently
celebrated their 32nd wed-
ding anniversary.
THE CUSTARD AT
Bagel Basket Deli on Or-
chard Lake Rd. near Maple
in the West Bloomfield
Plaza, is different . . . Much
more consistency than most
others . . . and delicious .. .
It's only been open a short
while, but the Bagel Basket
Deli is already becoming a
dessert haven for many .. .
with machine for custard
and yogurt . . . plus serving
Haagen-Dasz ice cream.
Jan Bagaley gets a lot of
support as a good waitress
. . . pleasant, cooperative
and efficient.
Bagel Basket Deli has no
delicatessen carry-out.
SAMMY LIEBER-
MAN is very much in the
catering business . . . Plus
Temple Israel, he now also
has the catering rights at
Temple Beth El.
CRACKERS DISCO
downstairs at Nifty Nor-
man's on Commerce Lake
Rd. in Walled Lake is closed
. . . but only to the general
public . . . The very popular
spot with probably among
the best lighting and sound
equipment around, is being
heavily booked for private
parties . . . especially Bar
Mitzvas . . . Owner Norm
LePage wonders why he
