Arson Hits Berlin Family
After Neo-Nazis' Trial Ends

BONN (JTA) — The
home and business of a
Jewish restaurant owner in
West Berlin was destroyed
by arson Friday night, a day
after a West Berlin Court
sentenced 10 neo-Nazis to
prison terms ranging from'
six months to three years on
a charge of forming a secret
Nazi Party chapter.
The
arsonists
also
painted the walls of the
apartment with anti-
Semitic signs.
According to police, the
arsonists poured gasoline
into the building and ig-
nited the structure. Police
said they found swastikas,
the Star of David and the
slogan "Jews get out"
smeared on the walls of the
restaurant and the upstairs
apartment. The owner,
Gunther Alon, his wife and
three children, were on vac-
ation and the restaurant
was closed. There were no
injuries.
In sentencing the 10
neo-Nazis, Judge
Wolfgang Hueller of the
Berlin district court said
he wanted "all to see and
make sure that the Nazi
gas chamber party can
never again raise its
head." Two other men
were sentenced to 18 and
14 months in prison, and
others in the group — five
men and two women --
received suspended sen-
tences and fines ranging
up to $500.

ernment has filed a brief
with federal Judge Anthony
DeGaeto recommending
that Hazners be deported.
DeGaeto recently granted
Hazners' attorney, Ivars
Berzins of Babylon, N.Y., an
extension in preparing his
brief, which was due last
month. The judge's opinion
should come two to six
months after both briefs are
filed.
Hazners is accused of il-
legally entering the U.S. in
1956 by concealing his al-
leged collaboration with the
Nazis during World War II.
At his deportation hearings
in Albany, witnesses from
Israel, formerly from Riga,
testifed that Hazners had
committed atrocities
against the Jews of Riga in
1941 and 1942.
Silton's group was met
by three of Hazners'
neighbors who criticized
the protest -and called
Hazners a good neighbor.
They said that the Israeli
witnesses had lied and
that evidence against
Hazners was prop-
aganda.
Two of Hazners' closest
neighbors. Edgar and Ralph
Steele, described hiin as a
personable gentleman. "My
family has Jewish friends,"
Ralph Steele said to Silton.
"We like the Jews, but you'll
keep talking until we don't
like the Jews."
The Steele brothers were
present at last year's pro-
test, when there was a
group who identified them-
selves as members of the
Christian Defense League
which has been described as
a right-wing anti-Semitic
organization.
Silton asked them why
they were carrying signs"
last year that said, "All
Jews are thieves." While
admitting carrying a sign,
Ralph Steele claimed he
didn't know what it said. He
told reporters later: "I didn't
print those signs. But I'm
glad somebody did."

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
There has been a sudden
spurt in the number of
Egyptian visas for- Israelis
who wish to visit that coun-
try, it was reported by the
Israeli Foreign Ministry
special office for visas to
Egypt.
The office said it had re-
ceived 59 visas in one batch
last week. Until now, visas
dribbled in in ones or twos.
Israeli circles assume the
increase is the result of
talks held earlier between
Foreign Minister Moshe
Dayan and Egyptian Minis-
ter of State for Foreign Af-
fairs BoutroS Ghali.
During a meeting be-
tween the two men at Day-
an's home, the Israeli
Foreign Minister expressed
disappointment with the
slow pace of visa approvals
by Egypt.
Hundreds of Israeli visa
applications were being
held up in Cairo, Dayan told
Ghali. The Egyptian official
told Dayan that the delay
was due to bureaucratic
snafus.
