The Ends of the World Meet I
at Jaffa Gate Sitting Stone

By BARRY CHAMISH
World Zionist
Press Service
There is a historical site
in Jerusalem which up until
now has not been recog-
nized, even though it has a
tradition that is ancient and
important. Ireland may
have its Blarney Stone,
worn smooth by years of
kissing for the reward of a
witty mouth. Mecca may
have its black rock, worn
smooth by kissing for the
reward of piety. But
Jerusalem has the Jaffa
Gate Sitting Stone with a
hole 10 inches in diameter
worn smooth by centuries of
derrieres for the reward of
comfort.
The stone is located under
an arch eight feet in length,
three in width and 20 in
height, beside the entrance
to the Jaffa Gate. The stone
in which.the hole is located
is the cloSest to the gate and
is located some eight inches
from the wall of the arch.
The hole fits all derrieres
and people five-feet-eight or
taller can sit in the hole, lie
back and relax in total com-
fort. The hole is as smooth
as polished marble. There is
not a disturbing bump in it.
If this seems absurd to
you, allow me to suggest
looking at a book called
"Jerusalem, Bethlehem and
Bethany" by J.L. Porter.
The book contains an
engraving more than 200
years old of Jaffa Gate. A
man is sitting under the
arch. He is sitting in the
exact position that people
sit today, in the Jaffa Gate
Sitting Stone.

To verify my suspicions
I spent two hours under
the arch watching people
sit by Jaffa Gate. Study
the following statistics: A
total of 112 people stop-
ped and sat under the
arch at Jaffa Gate.
Thirty-eight sat in the
hole. Bearing in mind
that many were in
groups, this is an ex-
traordinarily high per-
centage.

69 wore jeans, three had
guitars, one played his, 23
wore sneakers, 62 wore I
sandals, three were bare-
footed, four women wore
halter-tops, 41 tee shirts,
and 28 dresses. Only one
Arab woman sat on the
stone. Forty-one carried
packages, of these 38 were
leaving Jaffa Gate, not
entering it.
A brief history of Jaffa
Gate will explain why it has
traditionally been the gate
to meet people. Even today,
especially today, if someone
arranges to meet someone
else, it is often as not at
Jaffa Gate. Jaffa Gate is the
closest gate to downtown,
situated at the beginning of
the famous Jaffa Road.

Other than Dung Gate,
it is the closest and most
accessible to the Western
Wall. It is through Jaffa
Gate that pilgrims from
Hebron and Jaffa
entered the Old City. In
fact, Jaffa Gate was
known for a time as Heb-
ron Gate.

The gate was built in
1538-39 by Suleiman the
Magnificent. It was not his
favorite gate. The honor of
the most beautiful gate goes
to Damascus Gate known by
Jews as the Shechem Gate.
It was built over a large
ruined Roman gate and has
been the principal commer-
cial gate of Jerusalem for at
least 2,000 years.
Yet it is Jaffa Gate that is
presented to conquering
armies or dignitaries corn-
ing in peace. Jaffa Gate is
the only non-enclosed gate.
That is because in 1898
when Kaiser Wilhelm II vis-
ited Jerusalem, a rampart
of the gate was knocked
down, a road was built
through the rampart to
facilitate his large coach
and a bridge was pkiced
over the moat built spe-
cially for the occasion.
In 1917, when General
Allenby defeated the Turks
in Palestine, he again
marched his British army
through Jaffa Gate. Jaffa
Gate is covered with bullet
holes, left over from 1948
when Israeli troops re-
moved snipers.

The people who waited by
the gate fall into various
categories. Thirty-two dur-
ing those two hours were
European and under 25
years old. Eight were Euro-
pean and older. Thirty were
