Denver Tots Learning Hebrew

An experimental pro-
gram to teach four-year-.
olds to learn and use He-
brew has been so successful
at the Denver Jewish Com-
munity Center that officials
plan to add another kinder-
garten class for next year
with a similar Hebrew pro-
gram, according to a report
in the "JWB Circle," the
bimonthly publication of
the National Jewish Wel-.
fare Board.
Nancy Livingston, direc-
tor of early childhood educa-
tion at the Jewish center,
reported that the goal of the
erimental class, which
started last fall, is "to
completely integrate He-
brew into the center's nor-
mal early childhood cur-
riculum and to add a sig-
nificant new dimension of
Israeli culture through
games, stories, songs,
dances and unique holiday
observances as a way of

making Jewish life and val-

perience."
Ms. Livingston said the
initial plan was to introduce
the Hebrew slowly and
gradually but the four-
year-olds were excited
about speaking Hebrew and
began to "incorporate He-
brew words and phrases"
into their vocabularies.
She reported that par-
ents are learning, too. To
keep up with their -chil-
dren, "more than half the
families have at least one
parent enrolled in adult
Hebrew classes offered_
in conjunction with the
pre-school program."
Teacher Yedida
Rudawsky and assistant
Nessie Rappaport send
the parents lists of new
vocabulary words as well
as notes on activities and
concepts covered at the
center.
