Dipping Bread a Jewish Tradition

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1979, JTA, Inc.)

Jewish tradition requires
a person to dip his bread in
salt at the beginning of the
meal.
It has been explained
(Rabbi Moses Isserles, 167)
by describing the human
table to represent the altar
in the Holy Sanctuary. The
Bible (Leviticus) tells us
that every sacrifice re-
quired salt.
Likewise, every meal in a
Jewish home requires salt.
If the table is an altar, then
the food is like a sacrifice
and thus requires salt like
every sacrifice did in the
days of the Holy Temple.
This analysis and the
salt which represents it
raises the human activity
of eating above the satis-
fying of the animal in-

REHOVOT — Bringing
along some discoveries on
how living systems correct
their biochemical errors
and also conserve energy,
Prof. Lev Tumerman, 81,
has left his laboratory at the
Weizmann Institute of Sci-
ence for scientific confer-
ences in the .United States
and Canada to report on his
recent findings.
Arriving in Israel in 1974
from the USSR, where he
and his wife were impris-
oned for seven years during
the Stalin regime for
"Zionist activities," the oc-
togenarian researcher has
spent the last three years in
the Weizmann Institute's
department of chemical
physics. There he has pro-
bed the secrets of how cells
conserve energy when proc-
essing their genetic infor-
mation.

that if the Nazis would have
allowed it, the majority of
German Jews would have
joined the Nazi Party.

sti,nct of hunger. It makes
the act of eating a
spiritual experience. It is
claimed that salt is used
because it is a preservat-
ive.
The physical aspect of the
food is evidently disinte-
grated and reduced to
waste. The spiritual aspect
is preserved as an elevation
of the human spirit to divine
proportions.
The salt is said to have
been used to "preserve" the
covenantal relationship
which exists between the
Almighty and his people
therefore making it man-
datory that the Almighty
protect his people from the
harm desired by Satan.
Generally speaking, the de-
tail of ritual before and at
the meal slows down the
consumption of food which
proves to be a decided ad-
vantage for one's health.
