Jewish tradition requires a person to dip his bread in salt at the beginning of the meal. It has been explained (Rabbi Moses Isserles, 167) by describing the human table to represent the altar in the Holy Sanctuary. The Bible (Leviticus) tells us that every sacrifice re- quired salt. Likewise, every meal in a Jewish home requires salt. If the table is an altar, then the food is like a sacrifice and thus requires salt like every sacrifice did in the days of the Holy Temple. The physical aspect of the food is evidently disinte- grated and reduced to waste. The spiritual aspect is preserved as an elevation of the human spirit to divine proportions. The salt is said to have been used to "preserve" the covenantal relationship which exists between the Almighty and his people therefore making it man- datory that the Almighty protect his people from the harm desired by Satan. Generally speaking, the de- tail of ritual before and at the meal slows down the consumption of food which proves to be a decided ad- vantage for one's health.
