JPS Publishes Essays on Human Rights

PHILADELPHIA — "Es-
says on Human Rights —
Contemporary Issues and
Jewish Perspectives," has
been published by the
Jewish Publication Society
of America.

DR. DAVID SIDORSKY

Edited by David Sidorsky
in collaboration with Sid-
ney Liskofsky and Jerome
J. Shestack, the volume
deals with one of the domin-
ant concerns of the day. The
present volume, an out-
growth of an international
conference on human rights
held at McGill University,
brings together a body of in-
formed comment of the sub-
ject by a group of experts
who, collectively scrutinize
the recent record of
human-rights achieve-
ments and vicissitudes,
explore the Jewish ramifi-
cations of the issue, and
assess matters of practical
policy.
The 21 essays in the vol-
ume cluster around two
focal points of human-rights
interest — contemporary is-
sues and Jewish perspec-
tives. The two themes, as
David Sidorsky observes in
his introduction, are "re-
lated in many different
ways and on many different
levels.
"Historically, this rela-
tionship can be traced
back to the earliest ph-
ases of the idea of human
rights since the concept
has roots in both Hebraic
and Hellenic thought. In
modern times, the in-
teraction between the
Jewish community and
movements for human
rights has been intense
and complex."
Contemporary issues are
discussed in a series of es-
says by persons who have
been protagonists in the
forums of the United Na- .
tions — Daniel P. Moyni-

han, Rita Hauser, Leonard
Garment and Liskofsky.
These essays focus on the
role of the UN in the inter-
national protection of
human rights.
Walter Laqueur and
Louis Henkin offer analyses
of the special respon-
sibilities and new initia-
tives of American policy in
the area of human rights.
The volume also presents
case studies of the current
status of human rights in
the Soviet Union (Pavel
Litvinov, Yoram Dinstein,
and Michael Meerson-
Aksenov), Iraq (Mitchell
Knisbacher), and Israel
(Shimon Shetreet and Shes-
tack).
Jewish perspectives on
human rights are treated in
a group of essays that probe
the significance of the
classical Jewish sources for
till development of human
rights (Herbert Chanan
Brichto, David Daube, and
S.D. Goitein).
Finally, crucial aspects
of the Jewish experience
in modern times are
examined as they relate
to human rights: Jewish
emancipation and
liberalism (Salo W. Baron
and Jacob Katz); national
self-determination and
Zionism (Leslie C. Green
and Ben Halpern); con-
temporary to-
talitarianism and new
forms of anti-Semitism
(Jacob Talmon).
These perceptive investi-
gations serve to enhance
our understanding of issues

and ideals so vital for the
shaping of the future.
David Sidorsky is profes-
sor of philosophy at Colum-
bia University, where he
teaches ethical theory and
political philosophy. His
publications include a study
of the works of John Dewey,
essays on the liberal tradi-
tion in modern European
thought, and "The Nature of
Disagreement in Social Phi-
losophy."
Sidney Liskofsky is direc-
tor of the Division of Inter-
national Organizations of

He will bring more than
