12 F-4s to Egypt?
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Pentagon appeared last
week to confirm that Egypt
is likely to receive a dozen
F-4 Phantom jet warplanes
by October even if they have
to be drawn from the stocks
of U.S. active forces.
Thomas -Ross, assistant
secretary of defense for pub-
lic affairs, said that no deci-
sion has been made by the
U.S. to provide planes for
Egypt but the U.S. "could be
in a position to deliver 12 by
the first week in October."
He said that 16 Egyptian
pilots and 40 maintenance
personnel arrived in the
U.S. Monday en route to the
U.S. Air Force center in San
Antonio, Texas, for four
weeks of training in an
English course.
Payment for the planes
will come from the $1.5 bil-
lion the Administration
proposes to provide Egypt.
tended period of time in
such subjects as Bible,
confluent education and
Israel.
Judaica mini-courses will
be held, led by outstanding
scholars, in such areas as
Halakha, modern Jewish
literature and philosophy.
In all, nearly 400 individual
sessions will be held during
the four-day period.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Supreme Court refused
to reverse the conviction of
Likud MK Shmuel Re-
chtmann, who was sen-
tenced by a lower court last
December to 3 1/2 years in jail
for accepting bribes from a
contractor while serving as
mayor of Rehovot.
In rejecting Rechtmann's
appeal,_ the high court said
it was convinced that the
evidence given by the con-
tractor and other state wit-
nesses was valid. It also re-
fused to shorten Re-
chtmann's sentence.
