Elpern and his wife Paula
settled here four years ago
upon his retirement from
active educational work in
Detroit.
He had served, during the
first years of his settlement
in Detroit, as Baal Shaharit
— associate cantor — dur-
ing Holy Days. He also as-
sisted in forming many
adult study groups, both at
Shaarey Zedek, the Hebrew
schools and in other local
areas.
He was a founder of
Shaarit Haplaytah here,
assisted in organizing the
Parent-Teachers groups
in the Hebrew schools,
and has aided many
young people in advanc-
ing their Jewish educa-
tion.
In his native Lithuania,
where Elpern was born in
1909, he was first a student
in and then a graduate from
the Tarbut schools which
ranked among the best He-
brew educational systems
in the world. He studied at
the Sorbonne in Paris and
became an expert in the
French language, master-
ing the literature of that
country, and upon his re-
turn to Lithuania assumed
teaching posts in Tarbut
schools.
He was married to the
former Paula Rigmond in
1939. Both suffered the
agonies of concentration
camps under the Nazis.
They were separated during
the war in different forced
labor ghettos established by
the Nazis and were reunited
after the liberation.
Many marks of recogni-
tion have been recorded in
appreciation of his organ-
izational efforts in the
post-war years, especially
for his founding of the Heb-
raische Gymnasium in
Munich, and to this day he
hears from his students in
that school.
He was brought to De-
troit by his relatives, the
Meyers and Keidan
families — especially
through the efforts of his
cousin, the late Henry
Meyers. His mother,
Sarah Keidan Elpern,
was a sister of the late
Abba Keidan, father of
Judge Harry B. Keidan,
Joseph Keidan, Hy
Keidan and their several
sisters, the last of whom,
Ida Keidan Caplan, died
five years ago.
Before coming to Detroit,
Elpern assisted in Joint
Distribution Committee ac-
tivities in displaced persons
camps and in Paris, and
those he worked with in-
cluded the late Ceilia
Baruch, who served until
her death as director of the
Detroit Allied Jewish Cam-
paign Women's Division.
First as teacher, then as
principal of the Beth Achim
UHS branch, as an active
worker in behalf of Hillel
ISRAEL ELPERN
Day School, as an Allied
Jewish Campaigner and as
a Zionist, he received many
awards. He was given a
Hillel Day School Meritori-
ous Award in 1966. There
were other citations and the
late Rabbi Morris Adler was
among those who gave pub-
lic recognition of his labors
in behalf of Shaarey Zedek
and the community.
He is a linguist. He is
equally a master of French
as he is in Hebrew, and he is
highly qualified in Russian,
Polish, Yiddish and
Lithuanian.
