Labor. Zionist Leader, Proponent
of Yiddish, Benjamin Laikin Dies
Benjamin M. Laikin, a re-
tired manufacturer of wip-
ing cloths who was a leader
in the ranks of Labor
Zionism, died April 11 at
age 83.
Born in Pobelov, Russia,
Mr. Laikin came to Balti-
more at age 17. He settled in
Detroit in 1929 and was in
the wiping cloth business
here until 1960.
A linguist and a lover of
Yiddish, Mr. Laikin had
written autobiographical
works in English and in
Yiddish and had gained na-
tional recognition for the
aid he had given to cultural
institutions, to leading
Jewish authors and to Is-
raeli causes.
A major interest of Mr.
Laikin's upon coming to
Detroit was the Farband
Synagogue. He was the
organizer of the first Yid-
dish school in Baltimore
under the auspices of the
ArbeiteT Ring (Work-
men's Circle) and he con-
tinued that interest here.
- He also was instrumental
in efforts for the Farband

BENJAMIN LAIKIN
Camp and for many years
was a leader in Histadrut
campaigns. A participant in
the building of the former
Labor Zionist Center, he
was active in the planning
for the Labor Zionist Insti-
tute on Middlebelt Road in
Farmington Hills.
He held a national posi-
tion in the wiping cloth in-
dustry, having served as
president of the National
Association of Wiping Cloth
Manufacturers and upon
his retirement was named
an honorary life member of
the association's board of di-
rectors.
His late wife, Anna,
shared with him many
communal labors as well as
in sponsoring literary read-
ing circles. They sponsored
authors such as I.I.
Schwartz, Mendel Elkin,
David Pinsky, Abba Gordin
and others.
Mr. Laikin was a
member of the Interna-
tional Association of Wip-
ing Cloth Manufacturers,
Cong. Shaarey Zedek,
Poale Zion Branch 3 of
the Labor Zionist Al-
liance, Histadrut, Foun-
ders Society of the De-
troit Institute of Arts and
was a past president of
the Jewish Community
Council and an officer of
the Jewish National
Fund.
He leaves three daugh-
ters, Mrs. Pnina Wilkins of
Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Judith
Elkin of Albion and Mrs.
Shulamith Tuchman of
West Los Angeles, Calif.; 12
grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
