NEXT PRO MUSICA,

8:30, April 27, in Lecture
Hall at Detroit Institute of
Arts, will feature a couple of
young, very talented gents
. . . Cesar Antonio Suarez is
a 27-year-old Cuban-
American bel canto tenor
. . . and American opera
composer, 27-year-old
Frank•DiGiacomo will be at
the piano . . . Both were
selected' for the season's
final concert because of
their apparent destinations
toward stardom.

EVERYTIME ANITA
GOLD would go to Helaine

Cherrin's house, the good
smells coming from her
kitchen would prompt
Anita to say, "Helaine, your
cooking and baking are sec
ond to none. You should go
into business." . . . And
Helaine would always an-
swer, "Someday, when my
babies have grown."
Everytime Helaine Cher-
rin would go to Anita's
house there would always
be something new and in-
novative involving every
art and craft going on to
making dull corners in the
living room come alive .. .
Helaine would say, "Anita,
you should go into business.
Your ideas are fantastic."
. . . And Anita would always
answer, "Someday, when
my
_ babies have grown."
Times change, neighbors
move and children grow
Helaine was surprised
when the home decorating
lecture she attended re-
cently featured interior de-
signer Anita Gold . . . She
did the interiors of
Helaine's Bloomfield Hills
home . . . where Anita
attends Helaine's Scan-
dinavian cooking classes,
held in her kitchen every
Tuesday and Thursday
along with 20 other people.
LES BALLETS Troc-
kadero de Monte Carlo, the
highly popular, all-male
dance troupe, brings its
unique blend of comedy and
polished dancing to the
stage of the Birmingham
Theater April 26-28.
The company, known to
their millions of fans as the
"Trocks," makes all dance
the butt of their spoofery,
espetially the formal con-
ventions of ballet . . . Dur-
ing their Birmingham
engagement the Trocks will
perform one of their most
popular works, "Swan Lake,

-

.

Act II", as well as the
newest addition to their re-
pertoire, "Raymonda, Act
III."
The Trocks make theater
all the time they are mak-
ing ballet ... They walk the
fine line of parody, but
never turn it into slapstick
. . . Their dance technique is
refined to a point that it
would match that of many of
this country's top balle-
rinas.
QUOTES FROM recipe
booklet written by
restaurateur Duglass Dug-
la'ss, "The Cut & Dried Cook
Book . . . (Restaurant Dug-
lass is on Southfield and
121/2 Mile in Farrell Plaza):
"A dinner without soup is
like a dance without music."
About entrees, he writes,
"Don't follow my recipes
exactly. Experiment. Sub-
stitute. Tailor my recipe to
suit your own personality.
And have fun doing it
Throw caution to the wind.
Get your kitchen dirty.
Make a mess — who cares.
It's your house — your
dinner — and your own
creative time. Have a ball!"
About vegetables, Dug-
lass writes, "There are no
special recipes for vegeta-
bles in my cook book. I'm
convinced the tastiest veg-
etables are prepared in this
simple manner: wash, boil
and serve with butter. It's
that simple. So — why try
for something more elabo-
rate? Rather than fret over
vegetables, spend your time
and creative activities on a
centerpiece that will gener-
ate plenty of conversation
during the meal."

It was another of those lit-
tle restaurant gems that
seemed to abound at that
time in Detroit's aging fac-
tory and warehouse district
. . . The building was an an-
cient structure, originally
put up by a well-known
brewery way-back before
prohibition . . . In those
days, I am told, the barten-
ders and breweries all but
dragged the customers in off
the street to drink beer for a
nickel and partake of the
free lunch.
The interior was plain
and clean and the floor di-
pped gracefully here and
there . . . The kitchen was
very likely not as big as the
