Schindler Warns of PLO Attacks in U.S.
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Rabbi Alexander M. Schin-
dler, president of the Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations (UAHC),
warned last week that
"American Jews and Jewish
institutions" in the United
States will probably be hit
by Palestinian terrorists
and their supporters who
oppose the recently signed
peace treaty between Israel
and Egypt.
Addressing a press con-
ference at the UAHC head-
quarters, Schindler, who
accompanied Premier
Menahem Begin to Egypt
two weeks ago as part of the
Israeli delegation, said that
acts of violence by the PLO
against Israel are "bound to
increase" now and the vio-
lence will reach "American
shores" as well.
Declaring that Begin's
visit to Cairo was "an ex-
traordinary success" and

that he is "deeply
encouraged" by the progress
toward peace made by the
face-to-face meeting be-
tween Begin and President
Anwar Sadat in Cairo,
Schindler said that what Is-
rael and Egypt need now is
"time to give substance to
their formal agreement,
time to nurture that trust
which may embolden others
to take risks for peace, time
for a moderate Palestinian
Arab leadership to develop
so that Israel-Arab coexis-
tence in the West Bank and
Gaza territories will have a
chance of success."
But Schindler, the
former chairman of the
Conference of Presidents
of Major American
Jewish Organizations,

Leave Some Jews Homeless
NEW YORK (JTA) —
About 20 to 25 Jewish
families are among the .
17,000 people who have
been left homeless by the
flooding that has devas-
tated Jackson, Miss., since
last week.
Erik Hearon, chairman of
the local chapter of the
anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith, said that most of
Jackson's 250 Jewish
families lived in the north-
east part of town, the sec-
tion hardest hit by the flood-
ing. He said the families
that were evacuated had
large amounts., of water in
their homes and said the
damage individual families
suffered ranged from $5,000
to $100,000.
About four or five
businesses owned by Jews
were wiped out, Hearon
said.
Hearon was reached at
Temple Beth Israel, the
city's only synagogue,
which he said had been
made inaccessible earlier
by flooding of the roads
leading to it.

forts to move Egypt and
Israel toward normaliza-
tion at a faster pace than
their needs allow or to
force a "comprehensive
settlement that could
wreck the fragile peace
now seeking to take
root." He said that
American Jews should
be on the alert to prevent
Washington to "rush"
toward a comprehensive
Mideast settlement, and
to stop any such efforts at
the beginning.
Schindler said the Ad-
ministration still appeared
to be basing its Middle East
policy on the "three concen-
tric circles" theory of Na-
tional Security Adviser
Zbigniew Brzezinski in
which the inner circle was
made up of Cairo and
Jerusalem, the second circle
from 1:00 to 4:l P.M.
Brith International sent a
check of $1,000 to its Man-
assah Lodge in Jackson.
Another check for $850 was
sent by Bnai Brith District 7
which includes Mississippi.
Bnai Brith Executive Vice
President Daniel Thursz
said the money "would be
used to complement the
services being rendered by
other agencies such as the
Red Cross and the Salvation
Army" which are taking
care of those driven from
their homes.
Meanwhile, some Jews
living in Wichita Falls, the
scene of one of the worst
tornadoes which hit the
Texas-Oklahoma border
last week, suffered injuries
but none were killed, ac-
cording to the Texas Jewish
Post.
The information about
the impact of the tor-
nadoes on the estimated
50 Jewish families in the
north Texas city was
provided to the Jewish
weekly by Air Force
Chaplain Elliott
Weinschneider, who
serves Jews at the
Shepard Air Force Base
as well as the Jewish
families in Wichita Falls.
Weinschneider said he
had visited all the hospitals,
finding only one Jewish in-
jured person, Rebecca Selig-
son, who was released soon
after the chaplain's visit.
The chaplain was asked if
Passover supplies were
adequate and said all needs
at the base were satisfied
and that he had received no
requests for Passover foods
from Jewish families in the
stricken area.
brought in Jordan and the
so-called Arab "moderates,"
and the third circle was re-
served for Syria and the
Soviet Union.
"If, as I believe, this
scheme remains the Ameri-
can strategy in the Middle
East, then it is likely that
there will soon again be ef-
forts to cosmetize the PLO
and bring it into the negoti-
ations, perhaps as the
`authorized' spokesman for
the Palestinian Arabs,"
Schindler said.
"We would then see re-
newed pressure for with-
drawal of Israeli forces to
the 1967 borders — includ-
ing relinquishing East
Jerusalem to Arab sover-
eignty — all tied neatly to-
gether in a comprehensive
settlement 'guaranteed'
jointly by the United States
and the Soviet Union."
