The Best of Everything

RESTAURANTS
COME AND go as the
years pass by, but Carl's
Chop House on Grand River
still keeps packing them in
. . . Reason is very simple -
. . . good food at fair prices
and excellent service . . . a
trio combination very hard
to beat . . . All in all, dollar
for dollar, Carl's remains a
restaurant of dependability.
Waitresses like Segrid
Ellwood at Carl's .. . and
others like her . . . have
been there quite a while and
do much toward making a
meal much more than just a
belly filler.
Carl's has never believed
in cutting its portions .. .
regardless of how costs rise
. . . It still has the appetizers
of marinated herring and
cottage cheese . . . plus re-
lish tray with the biggest
and firmest celery to be had
anywhere.

Driving up to Carl's for
dinner on a weekend espe-
cially, you'd think they
were giving things away .. .
Truth of the matter is, they
-
are.
LOCALE OF FORMER

field and James Couzens
will become a seafood res-
taurant for lunch and
dinner . . . complete with
oyster . bar . . . approx-
imately July 1 . . . No

bought land and building
and it will be run by
restaurant-experienced
sons.
YES-
SPECIAL
TERYEARS dinner prices
. .. from over three years
ago on former owner Wally
Kostere's 1976 menu . . . are
in effect Monday through
Thursday now by Hugh
Caldwell at his Hugh's on
W. Eight Mile, west of Tele-
graph . . . Quite a change
from price jacking up by
other eateries.
ROSA D'AGOSTINO
was a very efficient and
courteous waitress at Ex-
calibur on Northwestern,
south of 12 Mile Rd., first
night of-Sid Hudson being in
town recently from Las
Vegas.
She is oi.e of the many
there who also pour coffee
with a plate shielding any
splatter or steam from her
customers.
A large photo of Frank
Sinatra, autographed to
owner Pat Archer, graces
the entranceway at Ex-
calibur . . . While at Pine
Knob a short while hick, he
told of "A joint in Southfield
named Excalibur that has
'The best ribs I've tasted." .. .
As the music system played
Sinatra singing, I had those
ribs and discovered what
are among the best Miami
. ember.baby ribs to be found
anywhere . . . juicy, tender
and meaty . . . I like my
sauce on the side so I can
taste the ribs, and these
were really good.
Both Sid and Frieda
had superb-looking
pieces of fish ... Pat Car-
lini also had the ribs and
most of the table helped
his wife Marge finish her
very delicious prime rib
of beef.
When Pat Archer first
opened Excalibur about a
year ago, he started out
with live entertainment but
didn't keep it long . . . Now
he has it back on a bigger
scale, though every time
I've been in there the place

Mission Cuts Traffic Tickets

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Members of the Israel Mis-
sion to the United Nations
have received less than
one-third of the tickets they
received for parking viola-
tions before Ambassador
Yehuda Blum assumed '
office late last August, ac-
cording to Gillian Martin
Sorensen, Commissioner of
the New York City Corn-
mission for the UN and for
the'Consular Corps. In a let-

ter addressed to the Israeli
envoy, Sorensen wrote:
"During the months
March 1978 through
August 1978 members of
your Mission received 2,125
tickets, or an average of 354
tickets per month . . . In the
six-month period Sep-
tember 1978 through Feb-
ruary 1979, 678 tickets
were issued to the Mission
or an average of 113 per
month."
