THE RYAN ROMEO

THEY SAY THAT
Norman LePage is never
happy ... That he must al-
ways make changes either
in operation, decor or food to
keep his inner soul from be-
coming tired. ,
This is true as far as the
restaurant business is con-
cerned .. k but also it is so
that Norm is the kind of re-
staurateur who knows .a
winner whenhe sees one.
Naturally, his one-year-
old Nifty Norman's on
Commerce Lake Rd. (off
Pontiac Trail and 15 Mile)
in Walled Lake, will have
his little changes here and
there ... but nothing dras-
tic ... this he says is the
best yet.
Nifty Norman's used to
be Squire's Table ... and
the complete turnabout
in atmosphere and menu
is quite amazing in its
transformation from ele-

gant to casual dining.
The intimate decor alone
at Nifty Norman's is in-
teresting ... red curtains
separating dining rooms
and each booth ... mosaic
tile squares comprising the
entire tops at tables and
booths . . . red cloth napkins
. .. leaded and stained glass
overhangs in the ceiling's
middle ... Dividers be-
tween rooms are like huge
book shelves ... On the
separaters are books, plants
and antiques ... Little
shelves on the walls also
hold antiques.
Dick Sharp, former ad-
vertising man, tells stories
while playing piano Thurs-
day, Friday and Saturday
. . . and teams on Friday and
Saturday with pianist-
songstress Betty Ridley,
who also does a fine job with
her New Orleans rhythmiz-
ing among the standards .. .
The piano bar patrons join.
in with much fun ... cus-
tomers bringing their own
instruments also ... like
wash tubs, trumpets, etc.
Evening manager Joy
Burris, so very gracious and
congenial, was one-time
Norm's head waitress ...
You could tell Joy knows
her business from the way
she assists the other wait-
resses in accomodating the
customers with excellent
service.
Norm and wife Bonnie
joined Frieda and I for
dinner and we had a con-
glomeration of good
things to eat . . . Greek
salad, Squire's salad (ev-
erything from the former
Squire's Table salad bar),
botana (Mexican pizza)
. .. little Canadian baby
back ribs among the best
I've yet tasted anywhere
. liver and onions, filet
and pickerel.
Everything was so good
and tasty ... Informal din-
ing in a casual informal at-
mosphere of intimacy that
oozes with pleasurable re-
laxation.
Our waitress was Sheryl
Sills, sweet, pleasant and
quietly efficient.
People, at other tables
were enjoying hamburgers
galore, soups, guacamole,
fried zucchini, fried mush-
rooms, nachos, chili, onion
rings, boWls of pickles, fried
chicken and even foot-long
Coney Island hot dogs ...
This is how the menu goes,
plus about nine dinner
items.
Seating at Nifty Nor-
man's is only 120 and
every nook and cranny is
worth all the effort Norm
