If the message underlying this year's Allied. Jewish Campaign - Israel Emergency Fund has a familiar
ring, it is no accident.

For Renewal is.a Passover concept. From generation to generation, since the
Exodus from Egypt, Passover has come to embody the spirit of rebirth' -- of
national revival and of personal, spiritual renewal.

The special meaning of Jewish Renewal at Home and Overseas relates
to our concern as a community for our survival and the survival of
our fellow Jews in Israel and in other lands.

Here in Detroit, there is no less a need for Jewish renewal on every
communal front -- for the aged living in lOneliness and isolation, for
the young who must be educated in the Jewish traditions, for the
poor and the troubled who require our care and concern.

We are painfully aware of the political isolation forced upon Israel,
the threat of terrorism to which her people are exposed daily and the
staggering economic burdens every citizen must endure because of
defense needs.

And yet, in the midst of all this, it is gratifying to learn of an under-
taking to uplift the poor, to complete the task of immigrant ab-
sorption begun three decades ago. Project Renewal. A rebirth in the
truest meaning of-the Passover.

We are no less aware of the uncertain situation of our fellow Jews in
Iran,the Soviet Union and other lands of turmoil and oppression. In
the darkest days of our past, there was nowhere to turn. No haven
for the persecuted. Today, there is a home for Jewish refugees. For
the renewal of their lives, in Israel and America, we carry a respon-
sibility.

We, the Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, call upon the members of
our congregations, upon every Jew, to join in this total community
" effort by making his or her best contribution to the 1979 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign - Israel Emergency Fund.

In,that way, with the help of the Almighty, we will help bring about
a renewal of the Jewish Spirit.

And, perhaps, in the true spirit of renewal, we should ask what we
want for ourselves and our children. Do we believe in strengthening
the Jewish community. so its survival is assured? This is what the
1979 Campaign asks of us. If our answer is yes, then we must back it
up with action.
