Dimont Optimistic on Youth,
Future of Jews in the U.S.

Max Dimont, whose
latest work, "Jews in
America" (Simon and
Schuster) was reviewed in
last week's Jewish News,
here last Friday for radio
and TV interviews and for
appearances at book stores
to autograph his books,
again was in the role of an
optimist on the future of the
Jews in this country. ,
Admitting that youth of
all faiths have turned to the
cults. Dimont is confident
there will be a loyal return
to and adherence of Jewish
ranks.
"What we need," he said,
"is positive Jewish educa-
tion, emphasizing abandon-
ing a ghetto psychology,
pursuing pride in the happy
events and in creativity."
He even feels there will
be gains from mixed mar-
riages, children of such
marriages becoming sin-
cere adherents to the
Jewish faith.

Israel relations are con-

Begin Role Must
Be Strengthened

HAIFA — Israel should
strengthen the power of the
Prime Minister in prepara-
tion for the coming peace
treaty with Egypt.
`:The peace treaty will
open new opportunities as
well as aggravate problems,
and will call for new tools
for policy analysis and deci-
sion making," said Prof.
Jacob Bear, in explaining
one of several conclusions
taken at the recent Peace
Workshop of the Technion's
Neaman Institute for Ad-
vanced Studies in Science
and Technology. Prof. Bear
is director of the institute.

cerned, Dimont is confident
that Israel, the only democ-
racy in the Middle East, will
never be abandoned by the
U.S. and that the partner-
ship will always remain
firm.

AJCongress Hits
Abortion Statute

NEW YORK — An Il-
linois statute requiring
unmarried girls under 18 to
obtain parental or court
permission for abortions
has been assailed by the
American Jewish Congress
as unconstitutional because
it is based on the theological
premise that "the fetus is a
human being from the mo-
ment of conception."
In a friend-of-the-court
brief filed with the Seventh
Circuit Court of Appeals in
Chicago, the Congress
argued that the Illinois law
violated both the estab-
lishment and free-exercise
clauses of the First
Amendment. The law
abridged the Constitution,
according to the brief, by
imposing "the theological
doctrines and inhibitions of
certain religions upon those
whose religious beliefs do
not exclude abortion proce-
dures."

Only 30 Jews
Still in China

Rebbe Applauds C arter Proposal

JERUSALEM — The Is-
raeli Government's infor-
mation center now believes
that there are only 30 Jews
among China's 839 million
people.

Jews have been in China
since the Eighth Century
CE but a permanent Jewish
community was not estab-
lished until the 1840s when
the British captured Hong
Kong and European powers
had spheres of influence
over other major cities.

NEW YORK — The
Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi
Menahem M. Schneerson,
publicly lauded President
Jimmy Carter for his pro-
posal to establish a new ,
Cabinet-level Department
of Education.
"The Lubavitch move-
ment has for many, many
decades considered the
furtherance of education as
one of its primary con-
cerns," the Rebbe said.
The Rebbe expressed his
appreciation for the
President's statement in his
State of the Union message

that a new Cabinet-level
Department of Education
would be "a very high prior-
ity" of his Administration,
and that the office would be
accountable directly to the
President.

Tall "Abe Lincoln" is shown reading his "Eman-
cipation Proclamation for Ilyinka Jews" at Aeroflot
Russian Airlines, as Student Struggle for Soviet
Jewry members carrying "stovepipe" signs mark
Lincoln's Birthday. This demonstration was in sup-
port of an action at the Western Wall in Jerusalem by
members of the few Ilyinka families permitted, to
leave. Their relatives.in the USSR are Jewish farmers
now blocked from even applying to exit to Israel.

With Empire there's no muss, no fuss. No
cleaning, because all Empire fish products
have been fully cleaned and boned. No
preparation, because they've been already
shaped, floured, spiced and herbed. All you
have to do is pop them into the oven and in

minutes, you're serving a crisp, golden
brown delight. Fish that blends beautifully
with your own special finishing touches.
When it's so easy to have something so deli-
cious, think about tonight. Doesn't your
family deserve the best?
