Four Israeli high school students were in Detroit
recently to speak to their American peers about Is-
rael. The visit was coordinated locally by the Jewish
Coinmunity Council of Metropolitan Detroit, who
scheduled speaking engagements at various high
schools, with Jewish groups and the media on behalf
of the visitors. Shown are, from left: Gilad Bachrach,
Hava Gellis, Gomer Ben-Barak and Moshe Brown.
The students are participating in a two-month tour of
the U.S. sponsored by the Israeli ministeries of foreign
affairs and education.

Shaarey Zedek Beth Hayeled
Plans New Programs for Fall

The Shaarey Zedek Beth
Hayeled (nursery school
and kindergarten) will start
its 31st year in September
by initiating several new
programs.
For the first time, two-
and three-day-a-week af-
ternoon classes will be of-
fered in addition to the
five-day-a-week classes
that are now available.
Children who attend in the
morning will be able to ex-
tend their day and remain
for lunch. Bus transporta-
tion also will be available
for those in the morning
classes.
A full-day kindergarten
will be added to the present.
half-day class. Parent-
toddler groups will be con-
tinued and increased. The
Beth Hayeled also has
planned Enrichment Pro-
grams to focus on gym, art,
woodworking, science, na-
ture study and cooking.
As part of its obser-
vance of the-- Interna-
tional Year of the Child,
the Beth Hayeled will
host an interracial, East
Side, Christian children's
group March 7 and 8. The
children will learn about

Judaism and the holiday
of Purim which will be
marked by the serving of
hamantashen andgifts of

greggers.

A family Sabbath
weekend is planned for Ap-
ril. It will include a Friday
night dinner and Shabat
morning services.

E. Germany Jails
3 Former Nazis

PARIS (JTA) — Three
former Nazis accused of
having participated in the
murder of some 5,000 Rus-
sian Jews, were handed stiff
prison sentences by an East
German court._
Two of them, Arno
Schumann and Kurt Melt-
zer, were sentenced to life
imprisonment and the
third, Rudolf Mikish, to 14
years hard labor.
The three were arrested
last November and were
sentenced after a two-week
trial which took place a few
months ago in the city of
Halle.
