"There may be more
Chinese restaurants in To-
ronto than in any other
major city in the West. Each
person has his own favorite
— most are heavily
patronized by local Chinese.
If you are adventuresome,
_just walk west on Dundas
from Yonge to Spadina and
take pot luck.
"House wines are gener-
ally very good (sometimes
even better than that) at
places we recommend —
most are reasonably priced.
`Big Name' wines are ex-
tremely expensive. In many
restaurants the breads are
equal to the best to be found
anywhere in the world.
Water, just plain water, is
excellent.
"People eat late in To-
ronto; 1:30 p.m. and 8:30
p.m. are peak times. Res-
taurants featuring fish, are
for the most part, only so-so.
Service and guidance im-
prove in direct proportion to
the diner's warmth, knowl-
edge and inquisitiveness —
put yourself in the chef's
hands. Liquor in general is
expensive; mixed drinks
tend to be small. Canadian
beers and ales are excellent,
far superior to those made
in the U.S.
"Chefs change em-
ployment as though they
were at a party featuring
`musical chairs' , for
entertainment; keep cur-
rent. Toronto is a town in
which many restaurant
reputations, media gen-
erated, do not thatch
reality; be careful. Fox
the best plaCeS- make
reservations FAR in ad-
vance, even before your
trip, so as not to be disap-
pointed.
"Having said all that, we
now list more than 50 very
good restaurants (plus some
tips on places to eat and
drink that are not exactly
restaurants in the full sense
of the word), followed by
facts, descriptions and the
actual menus of 20 of Toron-
to's best, most unusual, fine
dining places."
In all instances specific
comments are made on res-
taurants from continental
to ethnic to fish to soul, etc.

Benny's has become a
place to meet . . . something
like a social gathering spot
for friends . . . Its clean ele-
gance is inviting.
Before its opening and
even being made manager,
Roger Luden spent 75 hours
there without sleep.
Carol Keefe, bar man-
ager, was also at the begin-
ning.

Kevin Downing, vice
president and Ben
Kasle's right hand man at
Kresco, runs around to
all the places (Ar-
chibalds, Fox & Hounds,
etc.) ... He put Benny's
together in only six
weeks after Ben got
things going ... is just
26-years-old and started
with Ben as a busboy 10
years ago.
Roger, Carol and Kevin
have been - totally involved
with the opening and suc-
cess at Benny's Disco.

ONE OF Ti1E MOST
congenial, smilingest and
ready-to-please waitresses
is at Candy's, Southfield
and 12 1/2 Mile in the Farrell
Plaza . Her ;lame is
Donna Jewel and a gem she
sure is . . . always pleasant,
full of vim and vigor, a
swell, bubbling personality
and extremely likeable.
Unlike most other wait,
resses, Donna's obsession is
pouring coffee . . . she loves
it ... and brings the fresh
coffee in a clean cup .. .
She's the kind of Waitress
people enjoy very much.'
Candy's has a couple of
other good waitresses also
. . . very efficient, hard-
working customer-pleaser
carol Wilson and smiling
Robin Leshman.
Day-by-day the difference
seems apparent at Candy's
. . . better service, better
food and better organization
. . . The new menu also has a
lot to do with it . . . prices
within range now . . . Pa-
tience is rewarding and this
little spot is getting out its
kinks . . . Waitress uni-
forms are forthcoming .. .
New hours are 11 a.m. to 12
midnight Monday through
