The Best of Everything

THE FAST FOOD deli
concept has been something
many have thought about
but very few had the so-
called guts to try . . . It is a
gamble . . . so new, the
chance would big as to its
acceptance.
Last one was Downtown
Deli in the United Artists
Bldg., opened five years ago
by Sy Rabin and closed two
years ago only because the
building's new owner
wanted the space and re-
fused to give Sy a renewed
lease.
Now it comes to pass that
a full-scale one has opened
. . Sol's on 11 Mile and
Evergreen in the Lathrup
Landing.
Where Sy's was strictly
a sandwich shop, closed
daily at 4:30 and on
Saturdays and Sundays
... Sol's is open 8 a.m. to
11 p.m. daily and closed
Wednesdays.
It would have had to take
very experienced people to
put something like Sol's to-
gether . * . and the combina-
tion of Sol and son. Dave
Shpargel are offering their
many years toward its suc-
cess.
Sol goes back to 1938 as a
fountain boy for Bill Boesky
and Joe Freedman at Boes-
ky's on Dexter and Col-
lingwood ($16 a week) .. .
then as a sandwich trimmer
(trimming the toast) . . . and
sandwich man in 1939 ($24
a week) . . . On to 12th and
Hazelwood in 1941 for
Harry Boesky . . . then
Brass Rail on Adams .. .
and following service it was
Nate's Delicatessen on Dex-
ter . . . and Broadway Mar-
ket . . . In 1956, Sol opened
his own delicatessen on
Seven Mile and Schaefer.
It was here that son Dave,
then nine-years-old, started
out as a dishwasher for dad
. . . When 11, he was the ci-
ty's youngest counter man
. . . continuing on later at
dad's other sites . . . and
today as his partner.
Sol's in Lathrup Land-
ing presents a new con-
cept in deli dining and
carry-out ... It's the first
full-service deli like it ...
with a counter for your
tray and orders ready by

When David was born,
Sol and Ruth Shpargel, like
all parents, probably
dreamed of the day dad and
son would go into business
together . . . and so the time
has arrived.

not invited, as WLBS put up

shown that evening at Os-
