Danny Raskin's

LISTENING
POST

RECENT 25-YEAR cel-
ebration by Temple Israel
for Rabbi M. Robert Syme
and wife Sonya, had to
share billing with another
very important event in
their lives . . . although they
didn't know it yet.
A week later, they be-
came grandparents for the
first time when daughter-
in-law Debbie and son,
Rabbi Daniel Syme, of New
York, brought little Joshua
Shayne into the world .. .
Daniel gave the sermon on
honoring his parents and
son David concertized on
the piano for mom and dad.
It was a beautiful affair
for two beautiful people.
EVEN A SYNAGOGUE
has gone disco! . . . In be-
tween breaks at the Bnai
David Men's Club and Sis-
terhood New Year's Eve
Party, Disco Daddy will
•spin some topsy turvy tunes
for the subtle body gyra-
tions.
ARK LANES WEST on
Northwestern is the scene of
a two-man Bowl-a-thon .. .
with Steve Corlin and Lou
August rolling con-
tinuously for 24 hours .. .
Dec. 29 to Dec. 30.
Ark West is providing
four lanes so others can also
bowl three games each .. .
penny-a-pin (from sponsors)
being donated to
Glennwood Chapter,
Women's American ORT
. . . coordinated by Shaaron
Corlin and Carol Ulman.
Steve lives in Los Angeles
now but came in for the
Bowl-a-thon . . . Lou resides
in Southfield .. .
BELATED BIRTHDAY
Congrats . . . to Spanish
teacher Mindy Schwartz.
BLOOD BANK by Per-
fection Lodge Masons is
Jan. 8 and 9 from 5 to 10
p.m. at the Eleanor
Roosevelt School, Green-
field and 10 Mile . . . Barney
Lazarus, senior deacon, is
chairman.
HELLO FROM .
Esther Lover in Scottsdale,
Ariz. . . . Hubby Allen is
still a women's hair stylist
. . . She sells real estate in
nearby Phoenix and the
youngsters are growing up
"too fast."
ONE OF THE MOST
abused and least enforced
laws is that of people park-
ing in Reserved For Handi-
capped Only spaces . . . Offi-
cers should stick around a
while at supermarkets
especially and see how
briskly people come out to
their cars in these spaces.
Actually, you know, any-
body limping cannot park
there legally (a lot of people
feign sprained ankles) .. .
Special license plates de-
note that a person can park
in the handicapped zones
. . . Others must be ticketed
if the law is to mean any-
thing!
AMONG THE MOST
polite attendants work at
the Sunoco gas station on
Northwestern Hwy. south

of 12 Mile.
COL. ARTHUR C. BE-
CKER, head of Southfield's
Civil Defense, is a nice gent-
leman . . . Bothers nobody
and smokes his pipe in
peace.
BEWARE OF mer-
chants giving you due bills
less than the amount of
whatever merchandise re-
turned . . . It's gotten to be
quite a big racket!

LOOKING BACK ON
Columns Of Yesteryears . . .

JULY 24, 1953 . . .
"Something that cannot be
bought for money . . . You
either have it or you haven't
. . . The July 18 edition of
Saturday Evening Post
singles out Sam's Depart-
ment Store and the Jewish
Community Council, both of
Detroit, for their unadver-
tised, and therefore
genuine, contributions to
civic unity among our reli-
gions, colors and
nationalities . . . The Satur-
day Evening Post article,
`How Detroit Fights Race
Hatred,' pays deserved
tribute to Max Osnos-led
Sam's, Incorporated, De-
troit's second-largest de-
partment store in terms of
'volume of trade (quoted
verbatim from the article)
for their 'enlightened, ag-
gressive non-
discrimination employment
policies' and to Sid Shevitz-
led Detroit Jewish Commu-
nity Council for its work
with the mayor's Interracial
Committee, now converted
into the City Commission
on Community Relations
. . . The Community Coun-
cil, jointly with the Council
of Protestant Churches and
the Catholic Interracial
Council is actively par-
ticipating in the Michigan
Committee on Civil Rights
presided by Most Rev.
Frances J. Haas, Roman
Catholic Bishop . . The lat-
ter committee carries a
most effective educational
campaign designed to have
Michigan join other states
in passing a real American
Fair Employment Practice
Law."

DO YOU READ a news-
paper item carefully? .. .
Read this sentence and
count the f's . . . "Finished
files are the result of years
of scientific study combined
with the experience of
years."

If you counted four, con-
sider yourself supposedly
above average, five you're a
smart one, and if you got all
six you're way up there.
BETTY COHEN at the
Southfield Post Office tells
this . . . about a little lady
bringing a package, and the
clerk saying it was too
heavy . . . more postage
would have to be put on it
. . . "And if you put more
postage on it," said the lady,
"that will make it lighter?"
