in the Oval Office by Bil
Moyers of the Public Broad-
casting System. Their
hour-long conversation,
broadcast on the PBS net-
work included a general
discussion of Camp David
and subsequent develop-
ments in the peace process.

The President said that
the Israeli-Egyptian peace
treaty negotiations now in
their fourth week in Wash-
ington were proving more
difficult than the Camp
David talks where the three
heads of state remained in
close proximity until an
agreement was reached.
But he said another such
meeting was "not his (Car-
ter's) intention."

Asked why the U.S. has
presented two proposals to
Israel and Egypt for linkage
between a peace treaty and
the West Bank and Gaza
Strip issues after Carter
had said on Oct. 12 that
there was no legal connec-
tion between the two Camp
David frameworks, Powell
said that "both sides have
asked for assurances that go
beyond" the Camp David
accords and that "changes
are inherent in the process."

Jewish News Special
Israel Correspondent

TEL AVIV — For years
he was known among the
Hasidic circles in Bnei
Brak as a tall man who was
always ready to take any
difficult job.
He got up early, learned
Talmud, prayed and went to
work in factories. In the
evening he returned tired,
but never went to bed before
having studied the Bible
and the Talmud.
Some 16 years ago, then
Chief Rabbi of Zahal
Shlomo Goren met him by
accident. Moshe Meir
Justman, who was then
58-years-old, made a very
good impression on him.
Goren told him, "A man like
you is needed in Zahal. You
should be the controller of
kashrut in the paratroop
units. I am sure that you
will become their spiritual
father."

That is how the military
career of Moshe Meir
Justman of Bnei Brak
started. After 16 years'
service in Zahal and be-
coming the
"grandfather" of the
paratroopers, he told us,
"I came in close contact
with these dear boys. I
become convinced that
they need me. My task is
not confined to the con-
trol of kashrut. I give
them courage and serve
as example being always
with them in the base, in
the field, during training
and even at the front in
war-time."

Every Sunday, Moshe
Meir Justman goes from
Bnei Brak to the military
bases. Every Friday, he re-
turns in the afternoon to
Bnei Brak. But often he
stays at a base on Shabat.
Sometimes, especially on
the holy days, he spends the
time with the paratroopers
in Sinai, far away from
home and family.
It is not easy for a 74-
year-old man to travel to far
places. Moshe Meir
Justman told us, "I hope
that the land will grant me
a lot of years to continue my
work and fulfill with it the
missions put upon it. I am
with the units in hot sum-
mer and in cold winter days;
I live in a tent many days
during the year."
Justman was born in Po-
land and came 40 years ago
to Palestine. He settled in
Bnei Brak. He has a wife,
two sons and two daughters
and many grandchildren.

Justman is a veteran of
two wars with the Israeli
Army. In the Six-Day War
in 1967 he served with the
paratroopers on the Sinai
front and later partici-
pated in the liberation of
the Old City of
Jerusalem.

Three days before the
outbreak of the Yom Kippur
War, he was ordered to join
a unit on the Golan. But war
broke out and he was not
permitted through the front
lines. They did not believe
that I belong to it. "By acci-
dent the Chief Rabbi of
Zahal, Gad Navon, arrived.
When he saw me, he ordered
the military police to let me
pass."
After the war, friends in
Bnei Brak appealed to
Justman to end his army
service because of his age.
His family joined the ap-
peal. But, Justman an-
swered, "The paratroopers
asked me to continue. I de-
cided to honor their re-
quest."
Justman lives in two
worlds. With his paratroop-
ers he walks in army uni-
form, army cap and army
boots and his personal "Uzi"
sub-machine-gun.
In his apartment -

synagogue, he wears a long
black robe and, on holidays,
a caftan. During his many
years serving with the
army, Justman has become
a soldier like all the other
soldiers. But'at home and in
his small synagogue in Bnei
Brak, he is a Hasid like all
other Hasidim.

Don't run too far; you N.
have to return the same dis-
tance.
