The Jews do not have
missionary movements.
Generally speaking, rab-
binic tradition insists that
one who converts to
Judaism must do so only
with absolute conviction
based solely upon his own
volition without any feeling
of compulsion or ulterior
motive.
The first question asked
of a candidate for conver-
sion is "Why are you con-
verting?" (i.e., for what
reason?) If anything, an at-
tempt is made to dissuade
the candidate from convert-
ing, by pointing out the
hardships and antagonism
suffered by Jews (Yebamot
77a).

all. At certain times hostile
governments under which
Jews lived actually forbade
them from converting non-
Jews to the Jewish faith. At
other times, the rabbis sus-
pected some converts of be-
coming informers and
perhaps for having con-
verted in the first place in
order to be able to inform
against the Jewish com-
munity.
It is also mentioned in
the rabbinic literatwe
that in some places con-
verts embarrassed the
existing Jewish popula-
tion by adhering to the
practices and prinCiples
of the Jewish faith with
more fervor and loyalty
than natural-born Jews.
There is no question that
converts are accepted into
the Jewish community to-
day, but only after it has
been ascertained that they
are voluntarily willing to
accept all the command-
ments and practices as well
as the prohibitions of the
Jewish faith. To conduct
any kind of missionary ac-
tivity would certainly be
against the aforementioned
principle of conversion.
