liked the Jewish blessing.
This was the beginning.
Six years later, while in
college, she started reading
books about the Jewish
religion and beliefs, its cus-
toms and its people.
In the course of 10 years,
she read man _ y books about
Christianity and Judaism.
She visited the Hillel House
for Jewish students and met
the rabbi. She was invited to
lectures about Jewish cus-
toms and about the Ram-
bo. But she realized that
she knew more about
Judaism than the Jewish
students.
When she told the rabbi
that she would like to con-
vert to Judaism, he gave her
many books to study. It
turned out that she knew
them already. He asked her
to read them again. She
found in them all the an-
swers to her questions. A
year later she became a
Jewess.
Social integration was
difficult. She was cast out of

Negrosociety by people say-
ing she wished to be white.
Later Black Muslims pes-
tered her.
During the Yom Kippur
War Adrian organized blood
drives and collected parcels
for the Israeli soldiers.
When the war ended, she
flew to Israel, as a new im-
migrant. She went to an
ulpan where she was
adopted by two families.
She became Shifra Yakir.
After the ulpan she
learned X-ray technology at
Hadassah Hospital. She
gave up psychology and
looked for a religious hospi-
tal. She wanted to help men.
She found Shaare Zedek
and was hired in the de-
partment of defects in brea-
thing.
Shifra is living in
Jerusalem, but is still
closely connected with the
kibutz families which
adopted her. She has few
contacts with her own fam-
ily in the U.S. She remains
single, but has a lot of
friends and is a student of
Yeshiva Or Sam'akh.
