Mandell Berman to Be Cit ed at Federation Annual Event

Federation President Man-
dell L. Berman will receive
the Fred M. Butzel Memo-
rial Award for outstanding
community leadership at
Federation's 52nd annual
meeting Monday evening at
Adat Shalom Synagogue.
The dinner meeting at 7
p.m. will be preceded by a 6
p.m. reception.

Jewish Campaign activities
since the 1940s, when he
was a member of the Junior
Service Group (now Junior
Division). In 1947 and 1948
he chaired the group's "Save
Overseas Survivors" effort,
which collected tons of food
and clothing for European
Jews.
He moved on to the Real
Estate Division in the
1950s, serving as its chair-
man in 1956. Berman has
been a member of the Cam-
paign Cabinet since 1970.
Berman was a Federa-
tion vice president in
1972, when he was
elected prsident, a posi-
tion he held through 1975.
He currently serves on
numerous agency boards
and Federation budget
and planning commit-
tees.
Uri Lubrani, ambassador
and head of the Israeli mis-
sion in Tehran, Iran, will
speak at the Israel Bond
Medical Physician Di-
vision's dinner dance 6:30
p.m. Wednesday.
The event, to be held at
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek, will honor Dr. Ar-
nold R. Axelrod, recipient-
elect of Israel's Maimonides
Award.
Ambassador Lubrani was
born in Haifa and served
with the Hagana and Pal-
mach. He studied at Oxford
and returned to Israel to
serve in the Israel Defense
Forces during the War of
Independence. He then
attended London's Univer-
sity College and after
graduation served with the
Israel embassy in London.
Early posts included
serving as private secre-
tary to Foreign Minister

Uganda. He has also served
as a member of the board of
Koor Industries, in charge
of joint ventures and inter-
national projects.

Carolyn Rosenberg of
Southfield was selected as
one of three nominees re-
presenting the University
of Michigan for a Rhodes
Scholarship. The final de-
termination of the schol-
arship recipient will be
made in Chicago in De-
cember.
The daughter of Lillian
Rosenberg and the late Mr.
Irving Rosenberg, Ms.
Rosenberg recently was
elected to the Phi Beta
Kappa honorary. She' is a
senior in the honors college

first chairman of the CJF
Committee on Federation
Planning for Jewish Educa-
tion. He chaired the Ameri-
can Association for Jewish
Education's board of gover-
nors from 1966 to 1977. He
is also a member of the
board of the Jewish_Agency.
Berman has been a leader
of New Detroit, Inc., and of
WTVS-TV (Ch. 56). He is a
former president of the
Builders Association of
Southeastern Michigan and
chairman of the Michigan
State Housing Authority.
