Although the Bible con-
tains no direct command-
ment to visit the sick, the
rabbis in the Talmud sub-
sumed this requirement
under the general category
of duties required in order to
fulfill the biblical command
"Ye shall walk after the
Lord, your God"
(Deuteronomy 13:5).
The Talmud interpreted •
this to mean that a person
must emulate the deeds of
the Almighty (Sotah 14a).
One of these deeds, per-
formed by the Almighty, is
"visiting the sick."
The Talmud deduces that
the Almighty practiced the
virtue of visiting the sick
from the • biblical passage
(Genesis 18:1) where the
Almighty is described as
appearing unto Abraham.

This was after his circumci-
sion which evidently caused
him to be indisposed.
The heavenly reward for
visiting the sick is enorm-
ous. One is saved from
Gehinnom (Nedarim 40a)
and has also a great reward
in the world to come besides
being rewarded in this
world (Shabat 127a).
