Outside the glare of the
political spotlight, a modest
organization has emerged
in Israel whose fortunes will
be watched with interest by
many in the American
Jewish community.
_ The new body, formed
this past summer, calls it-
self the Movement for Con-
servative Judaism in Israel
(MCJI). In the wake of the
complex relationship that
has developed between
Conservative Jewry and Is-
rael, this fledgling group
represents an effort to win
independent status for
those in Israel who adhere
to the Conservative ap-
proach and who seek to be-
come part of Israel's reli-
gious fabric.
Its creation reflects the
development of a growing
constituency — 25 or-
ganized congregations in a
dozen cities and towns scat-
tered throughout Israel.
Fifteen of them have rabbis,
all of them trained in the
Conservative movement's
New York Center, the
Jewish Theological Semi-
nary of America.
In a society dominated
by a single religious
model — that of the Or-
thodox — Conservative
services in Israel tend
towards a more tradi-

tional coloration than
some in the U.S. where
women may now be
counted in the minyan.
Mixed seating is the
characteristic that
primarily serves to dis-
tinguish Orthodox from
Conservative in Israel
and their services show
little variation.
A yearning for some de-
gree of religious structure
has begun to manifest itself
in predominantly secular
Israel. More and more non-
religious kibutzim are
eager to sponsor services
during the High Holy Days
and they are attracted to the
Conservative religious ap-
proach. Their interest coin-
cides with a breakthrough
on another front — the
World Zionist Organization
— at whose Congress the
Conservative movement
took its seat as a member
organization last February.
At that international
Jewish forum, a resolution
was passed urging — for the
first time — equal recogni-
tion in the WZO and in Is-
rael for all of Jewry's reli-
gious groups. The resolu-
tion advocating religious
pluralism was adopted
through the efforts of a coal-
ition of Reform and Conser-
vative delegates, together
with the Labor Party and
the Derliocratic Movement
for Change.
If that vote was a har-
binger of greater interest
in Conservative Judaism
in Israel, it will mean
additional strength for
congregations that now
assemble in rented halls
(only Ashkelon, Haifa
and Jerusalem have
permanent facilities),
from Safed with its 25
affiliated families to
well-established Afridar
with 200.
It is estimated that about
40 percent of the congreg-
ants hail from English-
peaking countries. The
majority are Israelis who
h ave been there for longer
eriods, of whom about 10
ercent hail from Arabic-
peaking lands.
