JERUSALEM — Hebrew
University geographers are
interpreting a collection of
aerial photographs of Pales-
tine made in 1918 by British
and Australian flyers on the
Turkish front lines in World
War I.
Numbering 1725 photos,
the collection was borrowed
from the Australian War
Memorial Archives in Can-
berra by Dov Gavish, head
of the Aerial Photography
Division in the University's
geography department. He

tifying and classifying the
pictures so they can be re-
turned to Australia sorted
and catalogued.
Of great interest is a
series of pictures of the Tur-
kish front line area photo-
graphed by the Australians
in August, 1918, in prepara-
tion for General Allenby's
final, decisive attack on the
Turkish defense extending
from the Yarkon River
through Samaria and
Jericho to the east bank of
the Jordan.
British war maps are
proving to be a great help
in the jigsaw-puzzle-like
task of arranging and de-
lineating the photos. The
number on the maps has
to be matched with the
marking jotted down on
the photos by the pilots,
often in the heat of battle.
Unfortunately, funds
have not been found yet
for copying the originals
so that a set of negatives

The Pope Cables
Israel President

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
President Yitzhak Navon
has received a cable from
Pope John Paul I wishing
Navon and the people of Is-
rael prosperity and happi-
ness. Although it is custom-
ary for a new Pope to send
good wish cables to heads of
states, Jerusalem noted
with satisfaction that the'
cable was addressed to
"President Yitzhak Navon,
the President of the State of
Israel."
This was especially
gratifying since the Vatican
has not recognized Israel
and there are no diplomatic
relations between the Vati-
can and Israel.
In his cable, the Pope said
that like his predecessors
he, too, felt goodwill and
appreciation toward Israel.
He expressed confidence
that Catholics in Israel
would fulfill their duties to
the state and in this way
contribute generously to the
prosperity and well-being of
Israel.

Stations Refuse
Nazi Program

WASHINGTON — The
Public Broadcasting Serv-
ice (PBS) has admitted to
Newsweek magazine that a
"substantial number" of its
270 affiliates will not air
"California Reich" on Oct.
22.
The program shows
American Nazi activities in
California and was de-
scribed by one PBS station
president as "almost a re-
cruitment film." -
A
spokesman
for
WTVS-Ch. 56 in Detroit
said the station will not
broadcast "California Re-
ich" because it had no his-
torical perspective. "It just
shows a group of people
worshipping Adolf Hitler. It
does not show the killings,
the concentration camps
. . ." the spokesman said.

A HAPPY AND HEALTHY

Israel. The Yad Ben Zvi
Institute has offered par-
tial aid but more funds
are needed to complete
the job..
Pre-state aerial photos
provide information for
geographers, historians,
geologists, climatologists,
and botanists as well as
jurists and settlers who
wish to know the facts about
settlement on a particular
parcel of land before 1948.
An aerial photo giving an
overall view of the region is
often more useful than a
field survey or visit to the
area "on the ground." The
information is of academic
as well as national interest.
