`Aliya' Love Story Filled Wtih Nostalgia and Drama

"Aliya" by Brenda 'Leslie
Segal, in association with
Marianne Kanter, (St. Mar-
tin's Press) is more than a
love story. It is filled with
dramatic episodes affected
by the historic experiences
-of Israel's battle for life.
The book is dedicated to
the memory of Lt. Col.
Yonatan Natanyahu, who
was killed at Entebbe, July
3, 1976.

An aliya is a homecom-
ing, a spiritual and physical
return to the ancestral land
of Israel. For some people, it
is the fulfillment of a
lifetime of pilgrimage and
homelessness; for others, it
is a disillusioning entry into
a harsh, pragmatic society

where survival is second to
nothing.
For Segal's character
Meredith Sloane, cooly
beautiful daughter of a
Philadelphia banker, the
first trip to Israel is any-
thing but an aliya. It is an
official fact-finding mis-
sion to an archeological
dig sponsored by the
Metropolitan Museum of

Art, with a little sightse-
eing in her spare time.
Meri is charmed by the
rough beauty of the land,
the mixture of the cos-
mopolitan and the simple,
the warmth and energy of
the people, the breakfasts of
olives, cheese and yogurt.
But her American sensi-
bility is irritated by the Is-

Israeli Cabinet Votes to Oust
Gush Emunim Settlement

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The cabinet, meeting in
emergency session Wed-
nesday, decided to remove
the illegal settlement estab-
lished by about 70 Gush
Emunim followers on a hill-
top near Nablus.
A communique released
after the meeting said there
was no room for any settle-
ments not approved by the
government and warned
that such settlements will
be removed.
The cabinet convened as a
ministerial security com-
mittee with the participa-
tion of Foreign Minister
Moshe Dayan and Defense
Minister Ezer Weizman
only hours after their re-
turn from the U.S.
The meeting was called
urgently to deal with the
Gush attempt to plant the
new settlement in the
Samaria region of the West
Bank in defiance of the gov-
ernment and in contraven--

tion of Premier Menahem
Begin's undertaking in the
Camp David agreements
that no new settlements
will- be established in occu-
pied territories while peace
negotiations are in pro-
gress.
The cabinet's decision
apparently means that
the army will be ordered
to remove the settlers, by
force if necessary. The
Gush, infuriated by Be-
gin's agreements at
Camp David, took over
an 1,800-foot peak east of
Nablus Wednesday,
raised the Israeli flag,
and declared that they
were forming a new set-
tlement called Alon
Moreh, after a biblical
site in the region. They
vowed to resist any at-
tempts to remove them.
The army declared the
area a military zone and
blocked all roads to prevent
the infiltartion of additional
settlers while awaiting or-
ders.

Gush Emunim
Ordered to Halt
at Beit El Site

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Supreme Court Sunday
ordered a halt to develop-
ment work at Beit El, a new
Gush Emunim settlement
near Ramallah On the West
Bank, where 60 families es-
tablished themselves last
week.
In a two-pronged action,
the court issued an order
nisi requiring Defense
Minister Ezer Weizman to
explain within 40 days why
permission was granted to
establish the civilian set-
tlement on land taken over
by the army in 1970 for
military needs. The order
also applies to the military
commander of the West
Bank and the commander of
the Ramallah region.
At 'the same time, the
Supreme Court issued an
interim order banning the
army from engaging in ex-
cavations, construction or
any work on behalf of civi-
lian settlers in the area
until further notice.
