IF YOU'VE NEVER
had food from Thailand,
don't feel you're alone ... a
lot of folks haven't tried
Thai cuisine ... This is not
by their own choice, but
rather because there we-
ren't any Thai restaurants
that stayed around for long.
However, one has opened
which gives no indication of
closing for a long time ...
It's called Siamese Twins,
located on Opdyke Rd. and
South Blvd.
The name Siamese Twins
was taken because one-half
of the very spacious area is a
boutique filled with in-
teresting Thai clothes,
souvenirs and groceries ...
while the other is a 55-
seater restaurant ... so
very cute ... like sitting on
the patio of a house from
"Teahouse of The August
Moon" ... Very plain but
quietly relaxing ... with its
wooden ramp, wooden
beams ... wooden railings
... and wooden lamps hang-
ing from the ceiling.., all
so picturesque.
Thai food is great for
people on diets or vegeta-
rians ... as are many
Oriental dishes ... How-
ever, unlike other Far East-
ern Cuisine, except perhaps
Szechuan, Thai delights can
be very hot and spicy . . . un-
less you let them know
otherwise that your desire
is not to have it cooked this
way.

Our courteous waitress,
Beth Stainmayer, asked if
we wanted our food medium
hot or very hot ... We said
medium and wonder how
the very hot is!.. Beth
should have used the word
"slightly" instead of or
along with medium.
Before the entrees came,
we had a couple of Thai egg
rolls made with casings
more like the pastries used
in Greek baklava . . . then a
Thai salad with a very good
house dressing and crum-
pled peanuts.
The soup, Tom Yum Gai,
was a chicken soup sea-
soned with lime juice, lemon
grass and sliced chili pep-
pers ... It came with huge
chunks of chicken and mus-
hrooms.
Beth said the soup tasted
good over rice, so we left
most of it for our entree ...
Gai Pad Gra-Pound,
number 38 ... fried chicken
that's not actually fried, if
that makes any sense ...
and chili peppers all cooked
together ... We also tasted
the Goong Pad Normal (No.
48), fried shrimp with bam-
boo shoot, mushroom and
green onion.
Dessert was extremely
delicious ... Sung Kaya
not sweet and elegantly
tasteful ... made of sugar,
egg, coconut, cream and
pumpkin.
In Thailand, said Beth,
knives are not used ... Food
is cut with spoons ... so that
is what we used ... al-
though we're certain chop
sticks are available if re-
quested ... The dishes are
so very beautiful ... even
the ash tray seemed too
pretty to use.
If you want a true Thai
dining experience, stay
away from the items you
can get at a Chinese re-
staurant ... and enjoy the
cuisine as would a Thai like
Manager Eddie Chan-
druang, once known as the
"Don Ho of Thailand" ..
Ballad songster Eddie, who
will lead the entertainment
when Siamese Twins gets a
liquor license, can help you
very much ... Don't be af-
raid to ask him ... and
you'll go away saying, "Let's
come back here again soon."
THERE'S LINEN nap-
kins now at Excalibur on
Northwestern and 12 Mile
Rd. ... especially designed
dark brown and readily ac-
cessible at all times with
washing machine and dryer.
in a back room ... Also, the
former 10-seat piano bar
has returned ... and piano
entertainment may begin in
September ... Doing an ex-
cellent job as manager at
Excalibur is Nick Sorise,
very personable gent who
knows his business in a big
way ... and does a very top
notch job of making custom-
ers happy.
A LOST ART IN the re-
staurant business seems to
be training its help ... Too
bad ... The unexperienced
at so many places would
heartily welcome being told
the correct way to please
