SAM AGEMY, evening
manager at the London
Chop House on Congress,
gives the downstairs spot
someone it has lacked for
many years ... a person
eager to please everyone,
even the "spoiled brats"
that go down there ... Sam
is very personable and
gracious ... a popular favo-
rite with everyone ... The
same can hardly be said for
some of his waiters.
GOOD NEWS to see that
the former Starboard Tack,
Orchard Lake Rd., just
south of 13, has been re-
opened by true re-
staurateurs ... It's now cal-
led Eastman's Landing and
owned by Bev and Bill
Eastman, who for 18 years
used to have Eastman's
Gaslight on Grand River
and Bagley ... Before that
they owned Eastman's on
Southfield in Lincoln Park
. . . and even previously,
when Red Wing hockey star
Sid Abel was told it was
hockey or the bar business,
they bought his place and
changed the name to
Eastman's.
Bill loves to collect copper
pieces ... and his copper di-
ving helmet on display is a
dandy.
There's a big difference in
the place now ... No more
dingy-looking atmosphere
... Bev and Bill had a
couple of walls removed to
give better light and a more
airy look . . . This done
without sacrificing its inti-
macy.
The menu items go
from fish to chicken to
steak to barbeque ribs to
prime rib to sandwiches,
etc. .. and all are made
with the honored reputa-
tion that the Eastmans
have gathered through-
out their very fine re-
staurant years.
You must try the praline
cheese cake at Eastman's
Landing ... The firm con-
sistency includes a batter
made with pecans ... Its re-
cipe was sent by their niece,
Trudy Dietrik, home
economics teacher at Uni-
versity of St. Louis.... Two
words describe her praline
cheese cake ... delicious
and different.
FIRST MORNING
group is now at Hurley's in
the Northfield Hilton,
Crooks Rd. and 1-75 through
September.
SMALLEST HANDS of
any waitress in town belong
to‘ Andrea Glass, daughter
of Anita and Harold Glass
. . . big smile to go with the
little but sure hands while
plying her trade at North-
gate Deli, Greenfield and 10
Mile.
FOLKS WHO WANT
good Greek food without
paying for atmosphere will
like Athenian Cuisine,
Southfield and 10 Mile .. .
Just a little place but has all
the authentic dishes a fine
Greek restaurant should
have . . . and at probably the
most reasonable prices in
town ... Also, Athenian
Cuisine is one of the few
Greek restaurants to have
its own Gyros machine.
RENAISSANCE LIVE!
presents a blast from the
past when Freddy Cannon
performs this Tuesday ...
Cannon, best known for his
1950s-style rock and roll
music, was one of the most
successful artists of his day,
AFTER 10 YEARS at
his own spot on Seven Mile
Rd. and Evergreen, Dave
Perlin, one of the top
counter men around is at
Irving's Deli, Greenfield
and 11 Mile.
GEORGE FINK is man-
ager at the new Darbys on
Pontiac Trail, south of 15
Mile Rd.
LOOKING FORWARD,
not back, has made
Maynard Ferguson and
Woody Herman two of the
greatest jazz stars ever ...
Perhaps that's why P'Jazz
audiences are looking for-
ward to seeing perfor-
mances of Ferguson this
Monday and Herman on
Wednesday.
Both concerts begin at 6
p.m. on the poolside terrace
of Hotel Pontchartrain.
Now an established jazz
trumpeter and recording ar-
tist, Ferguson is no fan of
nostalgia, but combines to-
day's rhythmic pulsation
with the dynamics of the
jazz he helped popularize.
Woody Herman, heading
into his 42nd year of show
business, is another jazz ar-
tist who has never stopped
listening and picking up
new ideas ... He also scouts
new talent at high schools
and colleges where he plays
many concert dates.
