better preserved than ar-
cheological ruins on land,
are slowly being retrieved
by underwater ar-
cheologists. Many of these
objects and reproductions of
wrecked ships have been
gathered together in a un-
ique museum in this Israeli
port city.
The Israel National
Maritime Museum is re-
nowned for its remarkable
collection of ship models
which date back to 3,000
BCE. Here the replicas of
ancient Egyptian, Judean
and Roman ships have been
reproduced by skilled
craftsmen who refer to
findings on the sea floor,
original manuscripts and
wall reliefs to duplicate the
ships down to the last detail.
"The principle is to re-
create the ship so exactly
that if it were 20 times
larger it would sail," says
model builder Rudi Roth,
who labored many
months over a replica of
the famous 19th Century
U.S.S. Constitution. The
museum contains re-
plicas of vessels from the
Renaissance and modern
periods as well as those
from ancient times.
Other museum depart-
ments deal with marine ar-
cheology and ethnology, the
sea and ships as depicted in
art through the ages, sea
deities, old maps and at-
lases — plus a beautiful col-
lection of astrolabes and
sundials from past eras.
Director Ben Eli seeks out
the far corners of the earth
in search of acquisitions for
the museum. "Collectors
from many countries
around the world," he says,
"have sent us priceless
items upon hearing of the
unique nature of our
museum." Over the years,
the museum has acquired a
long list of prominent
friends and supporters in-
cluding James Michener,
Buckminster Fuller and
Lord Janner.
The bulk of the museum's
display pieces are found on
underwater archeological
expeditions of the coast of
Israel. The director of many
of these expeditions is Dr.
Elisha Linder, the chair-
man of the Department of
Maritime Studies at Haifa
University.

sions on the bottom can then
be investigated by divers to
see if they are wrecks.

Linder, who is pre-
sently directing a simul-
taneous land-sea expedi-
tion around the ancient
city of Acre says that,
"Underwater archeology
has several important
advantages over digging
on land. Underwater
ruins are often better
preserved than those on
land, and underwater
there is no mixing of
strata from different
periods. A sunken ship is
a time capsule that can
tell us a great deal about
its era."
