The Best of Everything
BACK IN 1938, Fotos
"Nick" Takis bought the old
Kingsley Inn . . . In the fall
of 1957 he opened the new
Kingsley Inn albw hundred
yards north at a cost of al-
most $1,000,000
Ask Nick what was good
on his menu and he would
tell you "everything" and
generally he was right . .
Nick claimed he was the
first restaurateur in De-
troit to introduce the cus-
tom of baking all rolls and
pastries on the .premises
and the custom still holds
true.
Nick was born the son of a
Greek herdsman ... at 14
emigrating to Egypt where
he worked as interpreter
and busboy at Sheppard's
Hotel, then one of the
world's most famous inter-
national rendezvous .. In
1910, Nick arrived in New
York with nothing but' a
frew drachmas . . . He
worked as a waiter at the
Waldorf before coming to
Detroit in 1920. .. By hard
work, Nick gradually amas-
sed enough capital to open
the St. Regis Restaurant at
513 Woodward.
Today, Kingsley Inn is
owned by Sam and Gabe
Zawideh . . . and is a ver-
itable complex of dining
and entertaining good-
ness . . . encompassing a
170-room hotel with three
award-winning dining
rooms . . . one of them
among the swingingest
lounges anywhere . .
always crowded with
fun-loving gals 'n guys
. . . plus oodles of ban-
quet area.

They don't build them
anymore like Kingsley Inn
. . . sturdy wood and thick
plaster, not dry wall . . .
Everything about it
screams of gracious ele-
gance . . in an epitome of
good taste.
Dining room manager
George Petrides reeks of
know-how and customer-
pleasing ability . . . Four-
and-a-half years ago he
came to Kingsley Inn from
the London Chop House
where George was head
waiter.
A recent visit there was
most enjoyable . . . thanks
to George, our fine waitress
Celeste Fabian and a dish
which is not on the menu.
The menu is most ex-
tensive .. . and not at all
expensive .. . Of the 11
items listed as chefs spe-
cials of the dal, seven
were fish and one shell
crab . . . The fish all
fresh, not fresh frozen.
After an appetizer of
chopped liver and a cup of
Boston clam chowder, we
were set for the famous tiny
perch for which Kingsley
Inn is so well-noted ... The
item not on the menu was
the perch amandine, Gre-
cian style — . Was it ever
good! ... There were the
same mess of perch, sea-
soned with oregano, salt,
pepper, fresh garlic, and
lemon juice squeezed on
them just before being
taken out of the pan.
While enjoying our de-
licious Grecian-style perch
. . and a lovely bottle of
Madonna Liebfraumilch
. . . amid a setting of
honest-to-goodness casual
elegance, there was Charlie
Dubin playing his usual
fine piano as always . . .
July 15 was 10 years since
Darbys burned down on W.
Seven Mile and Charlie
came to Kingsley Inn,
where he is a firm fixture.
There's also people like
Anestas Charlie, captain,
who was a 20-year veteran
at London Chop House be-
fore a short term at
Franklin Hills . . . and
Tom Fekov, also a know-
ledgeable captain ...
George may be manager,
but he'll still make his fam-
ous Caesar Salad for you.
Kingsley Inn is still
much more . . . Harry
Weinsaft heads the In-
ternational Art Gallery
. . . and the seven-day-
a-week dining operation
includes one of the best
Sunday brunches in town
at $4.95.
And who is now banquet
and catering manager at
Kingsley Inn? .- . None
other than just about every-
body's favorite . . . Dave
Fekay .. now in charge of
the nine banquetand meet-
ing rooms that include one
for 220 with dancing, or 330
without . . . The addition of
Dave to the finery of Kings-
ley Inn is heartily welcomed
by the many people who use
its excellent facilities for
their affairs . . . He ranks
