The Best of Everything

PIPER'S ALLEY OF
TROY in the Lawyer's Title
Bldg. of Sheffield Office
Park on Big Beaver, has a
lot of things going for it now
... all good ... Hard to beat
the homemade soups by
Chef Jeffrey Downey, a
four-year Piper's Alley
mainstay ...Excellent chili
and Manhattan clam chow-
der every day ... delicious
fresh vegetable specials ...
cream of carrot, cream of
celery and cream of as-
paragus ... plus the always
popular Piper's cold ges-
. pacho.
Every Sunday is jazz fes-
tival time at Piper's Alley of
Troy from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.
. . . with the Charles Greene
Trio giving out medication
for a happy evening .. .
Charles is a pharmacist at
Florence Crittenton Hospi-
tal.
The new menu includes a
Nicoise Salad . . . very popu-
lar ... with white Albacore
tuna, green beans, capers,
anchovy strips, boiled
potato and hard-boiled egg.
There's even something
for senior Citizens ... a 10
percent discount 4 to 7 p.m.
daily and 5 to 8 Sunday.
NOW THAT CHRIS
Hatzilias has bought back
the Beef 'n Bird on South-
field, just north of 11 Mile,
he has two partners with
him ... sons Louie and Soc.
In fact, Beef 'n Bird is a
real family affair ... Chris'
daughters Lucy and Florin
are waitresses ... and wife
Katy's paintings Eire on a
wall.
A beef buffet re-
staurateur for 23 years,
Chris made it the Beef 'n
Bird in 1970 after buying
the place from its former
Colonial House owners ...
He sold it in October 1976
and is back with the family
in full force now.
ONE OF THE FEW
Greek restaurants that has
Katopita (chicken pie) is in
the northwest area ... It's
Grecian Palace on Tele-
graph in the Tel-Ex Plaza
... The very tasty dish is
made by sister owners
Zanna Kieft:Tubs and Roula
along with
Merry .
Kreatopita (meat pie),
Spanakotyropita (spinach
pie), Tyropita (cheese pie)
... and the many other de-
lights they are becoming so
well noted for ... The pies
are all baked with fluffy-
thin layers of strudel used
in their very fine baklava.
The machine is now in at
Grecian Palace for its Gyros
which previously had been
cooked in the kitchen ...
Now the succulent beef will
be made the original way
... on a rotisserie.
They also make a special
salad dressing that people
love to dip their Greek
bread in ... While we were
there enjoying the four-pie
combination plate, a fellow
with a martini bottle had it
filled up with dressing to
take out.
THE AMAZING Kres-
kin performs on stage at the
Birmingham Theater this

Sunday, 7 p.m. ... One of
the world's top mentalists
headlines a month of book-
ings offering varied enter-
tainment ... Country and
Western fans can see Mel
Tillis July 19 ... and The
Manhattan Transfer is set
for July 23 at the Birmin-
gham Theater ... Vocalist
Helen Schneider will be the
special guest star at this en-
gagement.
WHEN YOU TALK of
knowledge about food ...
few people can match the
cooking experience of Steve
Garontakos, owner with
ever-smiling wife Betty, at
Dubbs Country Kitchen, 10
Mile and Greenfield.
Steve's chefmg know-how
is quite vast ... from the
kitchens of ... The Old
Place, which he opened for
Diamond Phillips; Cliff
Bell's; Topinka's On the
Blvd. for the late Ken
Nicholson; Frank Gagen's;
Roostertail; Savayard Club
in the Buhl Bldg.; Jim's
Garage; Franklin Hills
Country Club and Roma's of
Bloomfield.
Being a stickler for good
food, Steve tastes and over-
sees everything after it is
made ... which is why cus-
tomers at Dubbs have confi-
dence when they know
Steve is there supervising.
After a year absence,
long-time chef at Dubbs,
Mike Johnson, returned
last week.
GOLD COIN is the
newest Chinese restaurant
to open . . . flinging wide the
doors to its 130-seater last
week ... Smiling Danny
Lew is the young gent seat-
ing and greeting people.
If desired, Gold Coin, on
10 Mile, just west of Tele-
graph, in the Tel-Ex Plaza,
will cook your food to order
in oil ... and its carry-out
secret for crispiness is
maintained.
MAIL DEPT.... "Here
is what a group of men did
for a good waitress. Every
Wednesday evening there
are eight men that go to
Jakks Restaurant for din-
ner. Recently something
went wrong with the plumb-
ing, because of the rain
storm, and the place had to
close. Ann Pelleccioni, the
good waitress, called to tell
someone of the problem, so
they would not come down
and find it closed. It was
then decided to go to the
Danish Club for dinner, and
Ann Pelleccioni was invited
to be their guest. Once a
month the wives are also in-
cluded, and we too agree she
is a great gal." — Ida Sher
"P.S. The names of the
men are: Julian Winston ,
Harold Sher, Joe Kahn,
Herman Yarrows, Sam
Yura, Sam Glassman,
Charles Jacobson and Say-
more Serlin."
FIRST RESTAURANT
we know of where the chil-
dren's portions and prices
are available to everyone,
