U.S. Aid Not Tied

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Finance Minister Simha
Ehrlich does not foresee
cuts in United States
economic aid to Israel as a
means of political pressure.
Ehrlich reacted to reports
quoting "senior government
sources in Jerusalem" fol-
lowing a visit over the
weekend by three senior
American officials repre-
senting the State Depart-
ment and other U.S. agen-
cies which looked into facts
and figures presented by the
Israelis as part of their pre-
parations for the 1979-80

Sources in Jerusalem
noted that some officials
in the U.S. Administra-
tion had always been in
favor of cutting economic
aid to Israel, but it was
the political level that left
the economic aid at $185
million for this year, in
addition to military aid of
$L5 billion.
Although Ehrlich was
careful not to express pes-
simism over expected cuts,
he noted that there were ob-
jective factors such as the
"tax revolt" in the U.S. and
the tendency to cut down
foreign aid in general that
might effect economic aid to
Israel.
Weizman was not re-
primanded nor was a resol-
ution adopted urging
Cabinet ministers to abide
by government decisions.
Weizman told the meet-
ing he still adheres to the
Greater Israel movement—
which advocates Israel's
permanent retention of all
occupied Arab territories —
"but I am aware of the im-
mediate possibilities" for
peace. He said his views on
the subject had cost him
dearly in terms of his
career, hinting that he
could have become chief of
staff under the Labor-led
government were he not a
"hawk."
Meanwhile, peace advo-
cate Abie Nathan is con-
tinuing his six-week fast for
peace despite a plea from
Begin. Nathan said Begin's
letter was his death war-
rant since Begin did not
agree to Nathan's demands
that the military govern-
ment in the administered
territories and all Jewish
settlement be ended as a
peace gesture.
