400 Honor the Milans for JNF

More than 400 persons
paid tribute to Charles and
Florence Milan Wednesday
night at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek where the couple
were honored on behalf of
the Jewish National Fund.
The 'annual fund-raising
event of the Greater Detroit
JNF, the dinner was the oc-
casion to honor the Milans
"for- their lifelong dedica-
tion to the community, the
Jewish people, to the JNF
and to Israel." The Charles
and Florence Milan Park
was established in their
honor in the American
Bicentennial Park in Israel.

Rabbi Irwin Groner,
spiritual leader of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, made a tri-
bute to the Milans, long-
time members of the con-
gregation.

The Milans were pre-
sented with a plaque, de-
picting a menora, recog-
nizing their achieve-
ments on behalf of Jewry
and Israel.

Milan responded anec-
dotally on behalf of the
couple. The dinner occurred
on Mrs. Milan's birthday
and the guests rose to sing
birthday greetings to her.
Introduced_as one of Is-
rael's "staunchest friends,"
by dinner chairman Joseph
Jackier, Sen. Robert
Packwood (R-Ore.) gave a
description of his recent
visit to Israel, a purposely
detailed report which led
him to his major point: that
the recent arms sale pac-
kage to Egypt, Saudi Arabia
and Israel created an un-
equal arms balance in the

Middle East, detrimental to
Israel: Packwood voted
against the arms sales pac-
kage.
He continued • "What
right does the U.S. Presi-
dent have to dictate policy
in the Middle East? --
"The only solution that
will last is what the par-
ties' reach themselves.
The U.S. goal should be to
help them reach a settle-
ment, and not to dictate a
settlement."
In his opening remarks,
Packwood said he was
amazed by the land recla-
mation efforts being con-
ducted in Israel.

Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion President Martin Cit-
rin greeted the Milans on
behalf of the Jewish com-
munity.

Mark E. Schlussel, presi-
dent of the Greater Detroit
JNF Council, spoke in ap-
preciation of the guests of
honor, thanked the com-
munity for its efforts on be-
half of JNF and recalled the
accomplishments of the

Cantor Jacob Barkin of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek led
the singing of the national
anthems, accompanied by
Cantor Sholom Kalib, and
Rabbi Stanley Rosenbaum
of Cong. Bnai Moshe recited
the invocation and blessing
over the meal. Rabbi
Emeritus Jacob Sonenklar
recited the Birkat Hama-
zon.
The dinner also marked
