THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS 400 Honor the Milans for JNF More than 400 persons paid tribute to Charles and Florence Milan Wednesday night at Cong. Shaarey Zedek where the couple were honored on behalf of the Jewish National Fund. The 'annual fund-raising event of the Greater Detroit JNF, the dinner was the oc- casion to honor the Milans "for- their lifelong dedica- tion to the community, the Jewish people, to the JNF and to Israel." The Charles and Florence Milan Park was established in their honor in the American Bicentennial Park in Israel. Rabbi Irwin Groner, spiritual leader of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, made a tri- bute to the Milans, long- time members of the con- gregation. The Milans were pre- sented with a plaque, de- picting a menora, recog- nizing their achieve- ments on behalf of Jewry and Israel. Milan responded anec- dotally on behalf of the couple. The dinner occurred on Mrs. Milan's birthday and the guests rose to sing birthday greetings to her. Introduced_as one of Is- rael's "staunchest friends," by dinner chairman Joseph Jackier, Sen. Robert Packwood (R-Ore.) gave a description of his recent visit to Israel, a purposely detailed report which led him to his major point: that the recent arms sale pac- kage to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel created an un- equal arms balance in the Middle East, detrimental to Israel: Packwood voted against the arms sales pac- kage. He continued • "What right does the U.S. Presi- dent have to dictate policy in the Middle East? -- "The only solution that will last is what the par- ties' reach themselves. The U.S. goal should be to help them reach a settle- ment, and not to dictate a settlement." In his opening remarks, Packwood said he was amazed by the land recla- mation efforts being con- ducted in Israel. Jewish Welfare Federa- tion President Martin Cit- rin greeted the Milans on behalf of the Jewish com- munity. Mark E. Schlussel, presi- dent of the Greater Detroit JNF Council, spoke in ap- preciation of the guests of honor, thanked the com- munity for its efforts on be- half of JNF and recalled the accomplishments of the Fund.- • Cantor Jacob Barkin of Cong.
