Guest Columnists
It's "Meet, Eat & Enjoy
Greater Detroit" time once
again, folks, thanks to
everyone's favorite
restaurant-goer, Danny
Raskin, who has asked us to
guest-column again this
week while he idles away
the vacation-lazy summer
days, spooning down frozen
yogurt and listening to the
wind chime's siren song.
As the authors of the re-
staurant guide "Meet, Eat,
& Enjoy Greater Detroit,"
we have gone on record in
each of our three editions to
say that we do not rate the
restaurants we visit. If, in
balance, we do not like a re-
staurant it does not RATE
a place in "Meet, Eat, &
Enjoy Greater Detroit" so
spake Conway and Satch-
well.
So much for that delicate
subject and now to have
some self-indulgent fun
with the following excep-
tion to our rating rule. In
this column we're going to
let down our hair and share
with you some of our "bests"
and "worsts" that apply to
individual restaurants,
food, decor, ambience, et al.
Bear in mind that what is
one man's greatest taste
thrill today may just as eas-
ily cause another man's
bleeding ulcer tomorrow.
The restaurant scene is ever
fluctuating; certainly this
listing is not in any way ab-
solute and is subject to
change just as surely as the
prized morel mushroom ap-
pears and disappears each

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL
Danny Raskin's
Q. What is the most ex-
pensive restaurant but
worth it?
A. No surprises. It has
been and maybe always will
be the London Chop
House, for our money, since
we're talking about money
and quality. Nipping at the
heels of the Chop and a close
second is La Rotisserie in
the Hyatt Regency Hotel —
also impeccable.
Q. What restaurant
serves the least expensive
GREAT food? A. Zosia's,
the queen of Polish restaur-
ants — superb stuffed cab-
bage for $2.50. Such a deal!
Q. Which restaurant
serves the best seafood? A.
Joe Muer's.
Q. Where can you get the
best fried potatoes? A.
Jacoby's downtown, on
Brush St., Detroit's oldest
tavern-saloon . . . a three-
generation, family-owned
home away from home for
people who want to relax
and enjoy.
Q. Where can I get the
best hamburger? A. O.K.
there are all sorts of hang-
outs in the downtown area
(and all points north and
south) touting their 1/2 lb.
ground round on a bun with
everything ranging from
peanuts and sauerkraut as
toppings down to the pris-
tine low-cal variety — i.e.
melba toast, (no bun) cot-
tage cheese and 1/2 lb.
ground round. Well, we
have a tie in the hamburger
sweepstakes: Mr. Joe's in
Southfield and the Sabre
Lancet• on the East Side. If
you did away with all the
fancy feedback (pardon the
pun), and settled for a plain
hamburger at either of—
these very popular spots
you'd have excellent quality
ground beef. And that's
what counts.
Q. Which deli has the best
corned beef sandwich IN
THE WORLD? A. We
thought you'd never ask!
Could it be Original Irv-
ing's Deli? Yes, it could,
ta-da! Not even a close tie
here. Are you listening,
Rose and Irving?
Q. Which restaurant has
the best view?
A. The revolving Summit
at the top of the Detroit
Plaza Hotel where you can
capture a stunning 360-
degree view of the river, De-
troit, Windsor and the sub-
urbs from a height of over
700 feet.
Q. Where can you go for
one of the best business
lunches in town to consu-
mate a deal, see and be seen,
and have privacy if so
specified? A. The Caucus
Club. It still reigns sup-
reme.
Q. Which recipes (besides
Danny Raskin's superb
Veal Detroit) are your favo-
rites in "M, E, & E, D?" A.
We picked two from con -
tributors not in the restaur-
ant business. First is J. P.
and Judith Ann McCarthy's
celestial Chocolate Angel
Pie. Second, Fred Girard,
the Detroit News columnist,
