The forthcoming picture
will be produced and di-
rected by Andrzej Wajda,
who is best known for
"Kanal," the epic dealing
with the Polish uprising
against the Germans one
year after the destruction of
the Warsaw Ghetto. This
columnist engaged in a dis-
pute with Wajda when he
attended a press interview
session in Hollywood two
years ago after his picture,
"Land of Promise" was
shown for Academy Awards
consideration and nomi-
nated. I labeled the film
outright anti-Semitism. In
the final voting, it didn't
win.

based on the best-selling
novel "Freedom Road"
by Howard Fast which
tells the story of a Black
man's rise from slavery to
a seat in the United States
Senate. Not only are the
author and director of
the monumental venture
Jewish, but also the pro-
ducer's producer, Zev
Braun, who previously
distinguished himself by
creating a Western movie
location in the Negev
DeSert; he also produced
the anti-Nazi picture,
"The Pedestrian" in Is-
rael and West Germany.
On the screen, however,
Muhammed Ali will be the
champion of his people in
the most important work
about the reconstruction
period in the South during
which the poor white and
black families worked to-
gether and combatted the
Ku Klux Klan. The picture
will be photographed on lo-
cations in the deep South
later this summer, several
months before Ali is likely
to get a return match with
Leon Spinks.
Leon I. Mirell, the televi-
sion and motion picture
producer who passed away
in Hollywood recently, was
honored by a group of his
friends during a memorial
breakfast, the first one of
the formal events planned
by his widow to launch a
Mirell Professorship in East
European Jewish History
with the Harvard Univer-
sity Center for Jewish
Studies. Mrs.Mirell tells
this column that her late
husband was a member of
the national committee of
the center believing that its
studies are extremely im-
portant in maintaining the
continuity of the Jewish
people and the Jewish ex-
perience.
The late producer was
affiliated with Temple
Emanuel of Beverly Hills.
An entertainment business
specialist as well as pro-
ducer, Mirell graduated
from UCLA and Harvard
Law School and became an
attorney with the William
Morris Agency. During his
25 years in the industry, he
was with MGM-TV and at
CBS-TV and also an associ-
ate of the Gary-Moore Show;
moving to ABC he headed
Selmur PFoductions in all
phases of creative develop-
ment.
