Southfield Mayor Donald
Fracassi also presented a
proclamation, and State
Supreme Court Judge and
former Gov. G. Mennen
Williams sent a letter ex-
pressing his sympathy with
the rally.
Petitions from church
groups expressing their sol-
idarity with the Jewish
community in protesting
the neo-Nazis also were pre-
sented to the Holocaust
Memorial Committee.
Non-Jews representing a
variety of denominations
wore the yellow Star of
David armbands, as a mark
of solidarity.

2,000 Jam Anti-Nazi Rally Sunday

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
At Monday's White House
reception celebrating the
30th anniversary of Israel,
President Carter an-
nounced that he was ap-
pointing a commission to
recommend an official
American memorial to the
victims of the Holocaust.
Carter referred to the
Holocaust as "the ultimate
in man's inhumanity to
man." The six million Jews
killed by the Nazis, he said,
died in part "because the
entire world turned its back
on them." He vowed never
to allow such a horrible
thing to happen again.

Last week, Sen. Wen-
dell R. Anderson (D-
Minn.) introduced a bill
to establish a U.S. na-
tional memorial to the
victims of the Holocaust.
Sen. Donald Riegle (D-
Mich.) was one of 17
sponsors of the bill.
Mayor Walter E. Wash-
ington proclaimed this
