- American Express honored
all elements of the
synagogue's services and
programs could assure their
future viability and benefit
both -Israel and American
Jewish life.
Rabbi Alexander M.
Schindler, president of the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, also told
600 representatives of the
UAHC's New York Federa-
tion of Reform Synagogues
at a two-day convention
that lay participation could
mean the difference be-
tween a synagogue being "a
museum and one that
lives."
He said, "We must break
the barrier between pulpit
and pew by de-
professionalizing our reli-
gious life," noting that "no-
thing in our tradition re-
serves certain roles to the
professional leader of the
congregation."
Schindler cited, as
examples, a Midwest
congregation where lay
people spend the entire
year preparing the wor-
ship services; a far West
synagogue where par-
ents attend their own
religious classes or serve
as teachers at the same
time as their youngsters
attend classes; and a
Southwest synagogue
which has formed a hav-
ura of single parent
families, through which
they observe the festivals
and the Sabbath as a fam-
ily unit.
Schindler reported that
women are contributing
their services on all levels in
increasing numbers but he
expressed concern that the
expected 15 to 20 new
women rabbis scheduled to
be ordained by Hebrew
Union College-Jewish In-
stitute of Religion, the Re-
form seminary, might not
get full acceptance as rab-
bis.

Carter Impatient
JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
In a Jerusalem Post inter-
view, former White House
staffer Mark Siegal said he
believed that there were
some people in the Carter
Administration who seek a
public confrontation with
Israel.
The purpose would be "to
jar Israel from its present
negotiating position to a far
more flexible one that is
consistent with President
Carter's view."
In assessing Carter,
Siegal said, "I think the
President has a basic com-
mitment to Israel. But I
think he is terribly im-
patient."
Ku Klux Klan
Membership Up
NEW YORK — Some
1,500 members joined Ku
Klux Klans in 1976 and
1977, bringing the total
membership to 8,000, ac-
cording to a survey made
public by the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith. The League said the
increase, after 10 years of
declining enrollment since
a 1967 high of 55,000, is
"significant but not alarm-
ing."
The survey reveals that
Klan recruiting efforts are
now aimed at high school
students and members of
the armed forces.
