The Best of Everything
(Continued from Page 34)
hind not saying anything
about the good qualities
that every place pos-
sesses ... In our 36 years of
writing, and before, we have
never visited a restaurant
that was 100 percent bad.
Seems that these food
"critics" would even knock
their own mother's cook-
ing! ... Very strange.
LORI JACOBS has a
new album out called "Ev-
erything's Jake!" that could
climb the charts with rapid
regularity ... She'll appear
with comic Rodney Danger-
field, May 15 through May
20, at db's Club-Hyatt Re-
gency.
BLOOMFIELD CAN-
OPY on Orchard Lake Rd.
and W. Maple, is taking
reservations (they're a
must) for the April 24, from
7 p.m., jazz concert by Mar-
vin Kahn, clarinet; Kathy
Landis, piano; and George
Bennett, drums ... They'll
do their own special jazz
thing on progressive and
standard tunes, with three
sets already planned.
AFTER FIVE previous
names (Big Boy, Landmark,
Gallery, Old Attic, Italian
Old Attic), looks like one of
long permanency has fi-
nally taken over at the
Southfield and 102 1/2 Mile
Rd. site.
It not only is an Arbys re-
staurant . . . but also
houses the entire regional
offices for the organization
which bought the building
and property.
Everything was com-
pletely gutted upstairs
.. . the transformation is
unbelievably amazing
. . . and it is now a 104-
seater, self-serve Arbys eat-
ery.
The downstairs, which -
formerly was used as a
catering spot, has been
completely altered al-
so ... with desks and
offices ... The storeroom
and kitchen facilities will
contain a central com-
missary operation for
servicing the many Ar-
bys stores in the region.
On 10 Mile and Green-
field in Oak Park, the Arbys
there will have a complete
new look before summer .
an ultra-modern building
with more seating and the
very popular outside patio
umbrella tables.
LAST YEAR, Dennis
Ball ate 14 pieces of pizza at
Buddy's on Six Mile and
Conant ... In a recent con-
test there, he beat his record
by one in devouring
15 ... Debbie Heman won
the gals' division by gulping
down nine.
Challenge is made that
any guy eating as much as
Dennis, or any lass downing
Debbie's amount, within
one hour, will not only re-
ceive the meal free, but also
$25 cash and a Buddy's
t-shirt (bet Nathan Light
could do it).
DISPELLING RUM-
ORS that Pickle Barrel
Deli in Evergreen Plaza has
been sold, owners Sy
Ginsburg and Al Winkler
have formed a new corpora-
tion called PBDC (Pickle
Barrel Distributing Co.) . . .
The fellows are distributors
here of Shmulka Bernstein
Products (sausage, hot dogs,
salami, bologna) which is
also sold at their Pickle
Barrel eatery ... They come
packaged strictly kosher.
A FIRST HAPPENED
to us recently in a restaur-
ant ... We told the waitress
that our coffee wasn't
hot . . . She took it away,
put the cup of java in a
micro-wave oven, brought it
back boiling and proudly
exclaimed, "There! How's
that?"
SO MANY FOLKS have
looked on with envy as they
watched gourmet dishes
made at tableside . . . or
wished they could make the
elegant foods ordered at fine
restaurants.
Nell Benedict seems to
have solved their prob-
lem . . . She is director of
the Continental Cuisine
School of Cooking on 14
Mile at Crooks in Royal
Oak.
Nell and her staff are pro-

WE SALUTE
HY
HORENSTEIN
ON HIS BEING A VIENNA SAUSAGE
PRODUCTS CUSTOMER FOR 50
YEARS AND BECOMING A MEMBER
OF THE
VIENNA HALL OF FAME
52 years ago, Hy Horenstein started in the restaurant business
as a busboy and counterman at Boeskys on 12th and Hazelwood,
leaving to work as a counterman for Sam Boesky on Griswold.
He opened his own business in 1927, a little 30-seater on
Farmer & Monroe. Then, 42 years ago, he moved to Six Mile &
Santa Barbara. After 11 years, Hy opened on the corner of Boston
& Dexter, moving across the street six years later. This was
followed by Hy Horenstein's Deli on Livernois, south of Seven
Mile for five years.
Hy's last location has been his most permanent, at the
Dexter-Davison Shopping Center, 10 Mile & Coolidge, where he
has become an institution for over 16 years.
As the oldest active delicatessen man in the State of Michigan,
Hy Horenstein at 67, still works 12 hours a day, six days a week.
We are honored to have him as a customer.
