He was honored for "The
Fire and Mountains," a
composition scored for adult
chorus, children's chorus,
three soloists and a percus-
sionist. It is based on a poem
by the contemporary Israeli
writer Israel Eliraz.
The competition was
sponsored by the Reuben
and Edith Hecht Fund at
the Haifa University in Is-
rael for music on the theme
of the 30th anniversary,
based on works by three
Hebrew poets: Uri Zvi
Greenberg ("Holy of
Holies"), Aba Kovner ("Ris-
ing Night After Night") and
Eliraz.
Sixty-four scores were
submitted. The seven jurors
included conductors Zubin
Mehta of the Israeli
Philharmonic and Antal
Dorati of the Detroit Sym-
phony.

Expensive Peace

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The
president of Syria 25 years
ago, Adio Shishakly, prop-
osed a secret deal with Is-
rael for a separate Syrian-
Israeli peace.

According to Menashe
Eliachar, president of the
Jerusalem Chamber of
Commerce, Israel could buy
peace for $200 million depo-
sited in a Swiss account.
David Ben-Gurion ques-
tioned what would happen
to the "peace" if Shishakly
were deposed. This, in fact,
later happened and
Shishakly was assassi-
nated.

With chicken, mushrooms and
fresh asparagus.
