THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Jewish Divorce
Rate Is High

HASBROUCK HTS.,
N.J. (JTA) — The head of
the Rabbinical Council of
America expressed concern
over the widespread break-
,
'-- down of the Jewish family
which, he said has reached
catastrophic proportions.
Rabbi Walter S.
Wurzburger, president of
the Orthodox rabbinical or-
ganization, made his re-
marks at the Council's spe-
cial three-day Torah convo-
cation at the Sheraton
Heights Inn in New Jersey.
He cited statistics of a
-ecently-concluded national
rvey of the Rabbincial
ourt of America (Beth Din)
which indicated that alarm-
ing numbers of Jewish mar-
riages are being dissolved
and in some areas of the
country is approaching the
"shocking" rate of four out
of 1& marriages.
"It behooves us to con-
front the problem boldly
and to acknowledge it as
a threat to the vibrancy
and durability w,hich has
always characterized
Jewish family life," he
.said. ,,
Wurzburger noted that
"until a decade ago divorce
was such an unusual occur-
ence among Orthodox Jews
that it was considered
something of a scandal."
But now, he noted, the gen-
eral rising tide of divorce in
this country has also of-.
fected the Orthodox Jewish
community.

Black Pro-Israel
Group Started

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
new organization has been
set up, Black Americans for
Peace in the Middle East, to
provide educational mate-
rial about Israel in the black
community, Bayard Rustin,
the noted civil rights leader,
said.
Rustin, who is director of
the organization's parent
group, BASIC , - (Black
Americans to Support Israel
-Committee), said that
BASIC will devote itself to
political activities in sup-
port of Israel in Congress
and at the United Nations.
Rustin said the new group
was formed after the Inter-
nal Revenue Service denied
BASIC a tax exemption last
year, saying its work was
not education but "advo-
cacy." Black Americans for
Peace in the Middle East
will distribute pamphlets,
provide - speakers, organize
tours to the Mideast and en-
gage in other educational- -
-type work, Rustin said.
